Joseph-Breitbach-Preis (Joseph Breitbach Prize) is a literary prize awarded by the Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur Mainz (Academy of Sciences and Literature of Mainz), in Germany and the Joseph Breitbach Foundation. Established in 1998, the prize is worth 50,000 euros and is awarded annually in Koblenz, birthplace of writer Joseph Breitbach (1903–1980), for whom the prize is named. Ursula Krechel
Ursula Krechel (born 4 December 1947) is a German writer. Krechel was born in Trier. From 1966 to 1972 she studied German studies, theatre, and art history at the University of Cologne. From 1969 to 1972, she worked as a drama advisor in Dortmund. After 1972, she lived in Frankfurt am Main for many years and now works in Berlin as a writer, focusing on Lyric poetry, but also writing prose, drama, and radio drama. Friedrich Christian Delius
Friedrich Christian Delius (13 February 1943 – 30 May 2022), also known by his pen name F.C. Delius, was a German novelist. He wrote books about historic events, such as the 1954 FIFA World Cup, and RAF terrorism. Four of his novels were translated into English, including ''The Pears of Ribbeck'' and ''Portrait of the Mother as a Young Woman''. His awards include the Georg Büchner Prize of 2011. Biography Delius was born in Rome, where his father was pastor of the German Protestant Church. He grew up in Wehrda (since 1971 among the constituent communities of Haunetal) and Korbach in the state of Hesse. He studied German literature at the Free University and the Technical University in Berlin, and in London. The Academy of Sciences and Literature (german: Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur Mainz, AdW Mainz) is a scientific academy in Mainz, Germany. It was established in 1949 on an initiative of Alfred Döblin. The academy's goal is to support science and literature, and in doing so to help preserve and promote culture. Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt
Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt (born 2 May 1928) is a French writer and translator of German origin. Biography Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt was born in Reinbek near Hamburg, into a Jewish family of magistrates converted to Protestantism. His father was an adviser to the Hamburg Court of Appeal until 1933. He was then deported to Theresienstadt where he served as Protestant pastor of "Protestant Jews" deported because of their origin. Georges-Arthur fled Germany in 1938. He took refuge in Italy with his brother, then in France, in a boarding school in Megève. From 1943 to September 1944, he was hidden in Haute-Savoie among farmers, particularly François and Olga Allard, who were honoured on August 6, 2012 as Righteous Among the Nations. Erika Burkart
Erika Burkart (8 February 1922, Aarau – 14 April 2010) was a Swiss writer and poet. She was the recipient of many awards, among them the Conrad-Ferdinand-Meyer-Preis, the Gottfried-Keller-Preis, the Joseph-Breitbach-Preis, and the Wolfgang-Amadeus-Mozart-Preis. Ingo Schulze
Ingo Schulze (born 15 December 1962) is a German writer born in Dresden in former East Germany. He studied classical philology at the University of Jena for five years, and, until German reunification, was an assistant director (dramatic arts advisor) at the State Theatre in Altenburg 45 km south of Leipzig for two years. After sleeping through the events of the night of 9 November 1989, Schulze started a newspaper with friends. He was encouraged to write. Schulze spent six months in St Petersburg which became the basis for his debut collection of short stories ''33 Moments of Happiness'' (1995). Schulze has won a number of awards for his novels and stories, which have been translated into twenty languages, among them into English by John E. Woods. Raoul Schrott
Raoul Schrott (born 17 January 1964) is an Austrian poet, writer, literary critic, translator and broadcast personality. Schrott was raised in Tunis where his father served as an Austrian sales representative. He attended the universities of Norwich, Paris, Berlin and Innsbruck. He completed a thesis on "Dada 1921 – 1922 in Tirol". He translated Homer's writings into colloquial German. In 2008 he was appointed Visiting professor by the Free University Berlin. Markus Werner
Markus Werner (; 27 December 1944 – 3 July 2016) was a Swiss writer, known as the author of the novels '' Zündels Abgang'' (''Zündel’s Exit''), ''Am Hang'' ('' On the Edge''), and ''Die kalte Schulter'' (''Cold Shoulder''). Life Markus Werner was born in Eschlikon, in the canton of Thurgau. In 1948 the family moved to Thayngen (canton of Schaffhausen) where Werner finished school and passed the general qualification for university entrance in 1965. At the university of Zürich he studied German, philosophy and psychology. In 1974 he completed a doctorate on Max Frisch, whose writing has been an important influence on Werner. From 1975 to 1985, he worked as a teacher, and from 1985 to 1990 as an assistant professor at the ''Kantonsschule'' (high school) in Schaffhausen. Reinhard Jirgl (born 16 January 1953 in East-Berlin) is a German writer. Biography Jirgl was born in Berlin-Friedrichshain. He became a skilled worker for electromechanics. Then he completed a degree in electronics at Humboldt University, Berlin. He made first attempts at prose during his studies in the early 1970s. From 1975 he worked as an engineer at the Academy of Sciences. He gave up his profession in 1978 to devote more time to writing. He worked as a lighting and service technician at the Volksbühne in Berlin. Wolf Lepenies
Wolf Lepenies (born 11 January 1941) is a German sociologist, political scientist, and author. Biography Lepenies was born near Allenstein, East Prussia (now Olsztyn, Poland), in 1945 his family fled from the Soviet Army's assault on East Prussia to Schleswig-Holstein and from there to North Rhine-Westfalia. He eventually grew up in Koblenz. He studied sociology and philosophy at the University of Münster in North Rhine-Westphalia and graduated with a promotion in 1967. In 1970 he habilitated at the Free University of Berlin. He traveled abroad, first to the Maison des sciences de l’homme in Paris, then to the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. In 1984 he joined the faculty of the Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin before becoming a professor of sociology at the Free University of Berlin. He frequently returned to Princeton to conduct research. Christoph Meckel (12 June 1935 – 29 January 2020) was a German author and graphic artist. He received awards for his works which connect illustrations with the written text, sometimes texts by others.
