Jorma Kontio
Erkki Jorma Kontio (born August 7, 1953 in Oulu, Finland) is a Finnish Harness racing driver. With more than 11,000 wins, he is the most victorious harness driver in Scandinavia. Kontio started his career in the late 1960s. Since 2000 he has lived in Sweden. Kontio's daughter Anna-Julia Kontio is a successful Finnish equestrian in Show jumping. Swedish Trotting Criterium
The Swedish Trotting Criterium (Swedish: ''Svenskt Travkriterium'' or only ''Kriteriet'') is an annual national Group One harness event for trotters that is held at Solvalla in Stockholm, Sweden. It is considered one of the classic trotting events in Sweden as well as the most prestigious Swedish event for 3-year-old trotters. The purse in the 2008 final was ≈US$458,000 (SEK 3,200,000), of which the winner Maharajah won half. Location The Swedish Trotting Criterium has been exclusively held at Solvalla since 1966. The first five editions was raced at Jägersro, before the hostesship was altered between Solvalla and Jägersro until 1954, when Åby was added to the mix. Copenhagen Cup is an international Group One harness racing event at the Charlottenlund Racetrack in Copenhagen, Denmark. The race was established in 1928 and it was known as Internationalt Mesterskap (''International Championship'') until 1966. Since 1975 Copenhagen Cup has been held annually on the second weekend of June. The distance has varied throughout the years, from 1978 it has been 2011 metres. Graf Kalman Hunyady Memorial (german: Graf Kalman Hunyady-Gedenkrennen) is an annual harness racing event at the Krieau Race Track in Vienna, Austria. The race was established in 1898. In 1901 it was named after the late count Kálmán Hunyady de Kéthely (1828–1901), who was the first president of the Vienna Harness Racing Club (Wiener Trabrenn-Verein). 5-year-old European Championship
The 5-year-old European Championship, also called European 5-year-old Championship, is an annual Group One harness event that is arranged by the European Trotting Union, UET. The race takes place on a racetrack in one of the member countries of UET. The contenders are chosen by the different national trotting federations that are members of UET. Only 5-year-old European-born stallions and mares can be selected. The 5-year-old European Championship was raced for the first time in 1967. The 2009 championship was raced at Treviso Racetrack, Italy, on July 26, and had a purse of approximately US$132,000, or €100,000. Racing conditions The distance has most years been between 2,000 and 2,300 meters. There are two exceptions. In 1982 and 1986, the distances were 1,600 and 1,660 meters respectively. The European Trotting Derby, also called UET Grand Prix and Grand Prix de l'UET, is an annual Group One harness event that is arranged by the European Trotting Union, UET. The final takes place on a racetrack in one of the member countries of UET. The event is open for 4-year-old European-born trotters and was first raced in 1985. The 2009 final will be hosted by Tampere Racetrack, Finland, and has a purse of approximately US$607,000, or €460,000. Ã…by Stora Pris (literally "Ã…by Grand Prize") is an annual Group One harness event for trotters that is held at Ã…by Racetrack in Mölndal, 10 km south of Gothenburg, Sweden. Ã…by Stora Pris has taken place since 1936, the same year Ã…by Racetrack was opened. In 2008, the purse of the event was approximately US$359,000 (SEK2,400,000). Hugo Åbergs Memorial is an annual Group One harness event for trotters that is held at Jägersro Racetrack in Malmö, Sweden. Hugo Åbergs Memorial has taken place since 1970. In 2008, the purse of the event was approximately US$291,000 (SEK1,750,000). Hugo Åbergs Memorial is part of the European Grand Circuit. Origin Hugo Åbergs Memorial was inaugurated in 1970 to commemorate Hugo Åberg, who had died in a car accident the previous year. Åberg was a significant building contractor, responsible for many building projects in Malmö, as well as a horse racing devotee. Racing conditions Since the start in 1970, Hugo Åbergs Memorial has been almost exclusively over 1,609 meters, one mile.
