Jopie Pengel
Johan Adolf "Jopie" Pengel (20 January 1916 – 5 June 1970) was a Surinamese politician, and prime minister of Suriname from 30 June 1963 to 5 March 1969 for the National Party of Suriname (NPS). Biography Pengel was born in Paramaribo on 20 January 1916. He went to law school, but did not graduate. Van Dijck owned a large parcel of ground close to Pengel's home which was rented to poor Afro and Indo-Surinamese people, and started to demand large rent increases. Pengel started a protest movement against Van Dijck, and managed to raise enough money to buy the land. In 1949, he joined the National Party of Suriname, and was elected to the Estates of Suriname. He became one of the most influential politicians in Suriname at that time. In 1952, he became chairman of General Alliance of Labour Unions in Suriname. Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport , also known as Paramaribo-Zanderij International Airport, and locally referred to simply as JAP, is an airport located in the town of Zanderij and hub for airline carrier Surinam Airways, south of Paramaribo. Stuart Robles De Medina
Stuart Sasha Henricus Robles de Medina (December 14, 1930 - May 20, 2006) was a Surinamese sculptor, painter and designer. As a visual artist, Robles de Medina received several large orders, which the result can still be seen in Paramaribo. One of these assignments was the statue of Johan Adolf Pengel on Onafhankelijkheidsplein in 1970, after the death of Pengel. The statue is made of bronze. On June 5, 1974, the statue was unveiled. May 8, 1966, was the 100th anniversary of the States of Suriname. On this occasion, a monument made of bronze by Robles de Medina was unveiled on Spanhoek. Outside these assignments he was also a painter. Most of his works are in private collections. At least one work is in the Suriname Museum in Paramaribo. The Onafhankelijkheidsplein (, Independence Square) is a town square in Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname. The square is situated in the historical inner city, near the Suriname River and the Presidential Palace of Suriname. Before the independence of Suriname from the Netherlands in 1975, it was also called the ''Oranjeplein'' (Orange Square) and the ''Gouvernementsplein'' (Government Square). Buiten-Sociëteit Het Park is located on the square. On 1 Augustus 1996, the building which housed the National Assembly of Suriname burnt down. The National Assembly moved to the former park house. Paramaribo Zoo
The Paramaribo Zoo is the only zoo in Suriname. The zoo opened in May 1972, and was an initiative of prime-minister Jopie Pengel. It is located adjacent to the in Rainville, Paramaribo. History Prime-minister Pengel privately kept many animals in his garden. When he added lions to his collection in 1966, he thought it would be better to share the animals in a zoo. In May 1972, the Paramaribo Zoo opened next to the . Unlike most zoos, about 75% of the animals are local wild animals who had been either confiscated or were former pets. Except for the tigers, all the animals are native to Suriname. In the 1980s, during the military dictatorship of Bouterse, a large part of the collection was lost. Blaka Watra
Cassipora is an indigenous village of Lokono Amerindians in the resort of Carolina in the Para District in Suriname. The village is located near the Blaka Watra recreation area. It is also near a 17th-century Jewish village, however only the cemetery remains. History Cassipora is located near a former Jewish settlement which was established in 1665, and abandoned twenty years later in favour of neighbouring Jodensavanne. During the 19th century, the wood plantation Salem was located at the site. The village contains small clusters of houses occupied by one family which are spaced far apart. Cassipora is connected to the water supply, and since 2016, to the electricity grid. The village has mobile phone access. For schooling and health care, it is depended on neighbouring Redi Doti, which can be reached by an unpaved road. There is a conflict with logging companies who also use the road. Bubble Bath
A bubble bath is a filled bathtub with a layer of surfactant foam on the surface of the water and consequently also the surfactant product used to produce the foam or soap. Carolina, Suriname
Carolina is a resort in Suriname, located in the Para District. Its population at the 2012 census was 343. Most of the inhabitants are indigenous. Settlements The resort is home to the settlement of Jodensavanne, a Jewish autonomous area which was settled from 1652 onwards, and abandoned after a fire in 1832. The village of Redi Doti (also Redidoti) is located near the site of Jodensavanne. The village has been founded in 1930, and is home to an indigenous population of about 100 people of mixed Carib and Arowak background. Blaka Watra is a creek with very dark, near black water. Former Prime minister Johan Adolf Pengel built his country residence near the creek. The site was opened to the public in 1970, and became an important recreation area. Sepsis, formerly known as septicemia (septicaemia in British English) or blood poisoning, is a life-threatening condition that arises when the body's response to infection causes injury to its own tissues and organs.
