A hypocorism ( or ; from Ancient Greek: (), from (), 'to call by pet names', sometimes also ''hypocoristic'') or pet name is a name used to show affection for a person. Johannes Jozephus Franciscus "Joop" Harmans (29 October 1921 – 2 February 2015) was a Dutch cyclist who competed at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, where he was eliminated alongside his national squad in the first round of the men's team pursuit. He was born in Amsterdam and became Dutch national champion in the 50 km event in 1946. Following his Olympic appearance he worked as the manager of a bicycle factory and later opened his own shop in Amsterdam. Joop Geurts (February 20, 1923 – February 26, 2009) was a Dutch professional baseball player for Schoten Haarlem of the Hoofdklasse Honkbal or Major League Baseball in Dutch. He was also a member of the Netherlands national baseball team. Career Geurts made his debut in the Dutch national team in 1938 as a catcher, at only 15 years of age. In 1957 he was named Most Valuable Player of the Main Class. Between 1956 and 1960 he captured the European title four times with the Dutch team. Geurts appeared in 36 games over 23 years for the national team. In 1956 he was part of the selection that came out for the first time against the United States team and was also named a team captain. Playing career Born in Hoogezand-Sappemeer, Groningen, Gall spent his entire career playing with three teams, all from the North of the Netherlands: BV Veendam, FC Groningen and SC Heerenveen.
