Jonathan Kenneth Butler (born 10 October 1961) is a South African singer-songwriter and guitarist. His music is often classified as R&B, jazz fusion or worship music. Biography Born and raised in Athlone, Cape Town, South Africa, during Apartheid, Butler started singing and playing acoustic guitar as a child. Racial segregation and poverty during Apartheid has been the subject of many of his records. His first single was the first by a black artist played by white radio stations in the racially segregated South Africa and earned a Sarie Award, South Africa's equivalent to the Grammy Awards. He began touring at the age of seven when he joined a travelling stage show, and was later signed up to perform on a string of hit recordings, turning him into a local teen idol. In 1975, his cover of " Please Stay" by the Drifters reached number 2 in South Africa. The same year his cover of "I Love How You Love Me" by The Paris Sisters reached number 4. ''More Than Friends'' is an album by the South African musician Jonathan Butler, released in 1988. The title track was released as a single. The album peaked at No. 113 on the ''Billboard'' 200. Butler supported the album by touring with Najee and Angela Bofill. Production Butler made it a point to avoid writing about South Africa and its politics. He added elements of hip hop to his sound on ''More Than Friends''; "True Love Never Fails", a duet with Vanessa Bell Armstrong, incorporated gospel influences. Butler did not feel like he was abandoning jazz so much as becoming more aware of popular music styles. "Sekona" is an instrumental. Critical reception ''The Washington Post'' opined that Butler "has all but abandoned whatever musical and vocal distinctiveness he once had in favor of his copycat commercial bent." "Lies" is a 1987 song by South African singer-songwriter/guitarist Jonathan Butler. It was co-written by Butler along with Jolyon Skinner. Issued as the leadoff single from his 1987 self-titled studio album, "Lies" became a breakthrough hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #27 and becoming what remains his only Top 40 Pop hit to date. However, the song achieved significantly more success on the U.S. R&B chart, where it became his first of several top ten hits (cresting at #5), and also did well on the Adult Contemporary chart (#16). "Lies" also became a moderate hit in the UK (#18), and Ireland (#16), in addition to spending two weeks at #11 on the Canadian Adult Contemporary chart. Kent Music Report
The Kent Music Report was a weekly record chart of Australian music singles and albums which was compiled by music enthusiast David Kent from May 1974 through to January 1999. The chart was re-branded the Australian Music Report (AMR) in July 1987. From June 1988, the Australian Recording Industry Association, which had been using the top 50 portion of the report under licence since mid-1983, chose to produce their own listing as the ARIA Charts. Before the Kent Report, ''Go-Set'' magazine published weekly Top-40 Singles from 1966, and Album charts from 1970 until the magazine's demise in August 1974. David Kent later published Australian charts from 1940 to 1973 in a retrospective fashion, using state by state chart data obtained from various Australian radio stations.
