Jolanda Slenter
Jolanda Slenter (born ) is a Dutch female Paralympic sitting volleyball player. She is part of the Netherlands women's national sitting volleyball team. She competed at the 2004 Summer Paralympics, 2008 Summer Paralympics, and 2012 Summer Paralympics, finishing 4th, after losing from Ukraine in the bronze medal match. On club level she played for Holyoke in 2012. Holyoke is a city in Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States, that lies between the western bank of the Connecticut River and the Mount Tom Range. As opposed to standing volleyball, sitting volleyball players must have at least one buttock in contact with the floor during the game. Volleyball at the 2004 Summer Paralympics was staged at the Helliniko Fencing Hall from 21 to 27 September. Two sitting volleyball team events were held, one for men and one for women. The sport is performed sitting down, on a smaller court with a lower net. This was the first Summer Paralympic Games without standing volleyball events, which had been included from the introduction of volleyball in 1976 (when sitting volleyball was a demonstration event) through 2000. The tournament brought Bosnia and Herzegovina their first ever Paralympic gold medal. Their team consisted of players injured in the War of 1992-95. Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Paralympics was held in the China Agricultural University Gymnasium from 7 September to 15 September. Two sitting volleyball team events were held, one for men and one for women. In the men's sitting event, Bosnia and Herzegovina were the defending champions. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iran had been the finalists in both 2000 and 2004, with Iran winning in 2000 and Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2004. These two countries met once more in the final in Beijing, with Iran emerging victorious by 3 goals to nil. Egypt, the bronze medal-winners of 2008, finished fourth, beaten 2:3 by Russia, who took bronze. The Beijing Games marked the second time the women's sitting event was held. China were the defending champions, while the Netherlands had taken silver, and the United States bronze, in 2004. In the men's sitting event, Iran were the defending champions. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iran were the finalists in 2000, 2004 and 2008, with Iran winning in 2000 and 2008 and Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2004.
