Joint Special Forces Operations Headquarters (Italy)
The Joint Special Forces Operations Headquarters ( it, Comando interforze per le operazioni delle forze speciali, COFS) is the joint command of the Italian Armed Forces charged with overseeing the various special operations units of the Italian Armed Forces. The command is part of the Joint Operations Command and is validated as NATO Component Command. COFS is headquartered at Centocelle Airport in Rome, Italy. Mission At the national level, COFS is the Command specifically designated in charge of planning, organizing and conducting Special Operations, which include special reconnaissance, direct actions and military assistance. COFS commander is also an advisor to the Chief of Defense for all aspects concerning Special Operations. The Joint Operations Headquarters ( it, Comando Operativo di Vertice Interforze, COVI) is the Italian joint operational command directly reporting to the Chief of the Defence Staff. This command exercises the planning, coordination and direction of the military operations of the Italian armed forces, and on joint and multinational exercises and all activities connected to them. Through the COVI, the Chief of the Defence Staff is able to exercise his functions as Operational Commander of the Armed Forces. History The Joint Operations Headquarters was established in 1998 in order to provide the Chief of the Defence Staff of the means to direct the whole operational activity of the Italian Armed Forces. The 185th Paratroopers Reconnaissance Target Acquisition Regiment "Folgore" ( it, 185° Reggimento Paracadutisti Ricognizione Acquisizione Obiettivi "Folgore", abbreviated as: 185° RAO) is an Italian Army special forces unit. The regiment is part of the Italian Army's infantry arm's Paracadutisti speciality and assigned to the Army Special Forces Command. The regiment was the first Italian paratroopers regiment to be formed. The regiment was assigned to the Paratroopers Division, which was intended to parachute onto Malta during the planned invasion of Malta. When the invasion was canceled the division was sent in September 1942 to North Africa as reinforcement for the German-Italian Panzer Army Africa. Before leaving Italy the regiment was detached and used to form the 184th Infantry Division "Nembo". The regiment has been involved in numerous military and anti-terrorist operations and is the only one to have participated in all out-of-area missions of the Italian Army since World War II. Lieutenant general (Lt Gen, LTG and similar) is a three-star military rank (NATO code OF-8) used in many countries. The rank traces its origins to the Middle Ages, where the title of lieutenant general was held by the second-in-command on the battlefield, who was normally subordinate to a captain general.
