Johnston County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 215,999. Its county seat is Smithfield. Johnston County is included in the Raleigh, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, NC Combined Statistical Area, which has a population of 1,998,808 as of U.S. Census 2012 Population Estimates. History The county was formed in 1746 from Craven County. It was named for Gabriel Johnston, Governor of North Carolina from 1734 to 1752. In 1752 parts of Johnston County, Bladen County, and Granville County were combined to form Orange County. In 1758 the eastern part of Johnston County became Dobbs County. In 1770 parts of Johnston County, Cumberland County, and Orange County were combined to form Wake County. Wilson's Mills is a town in Johnston County, North Carolina, United States. In 2010, the population was 2,277, up from 1,291 in 2000. As of 2018, the estimated population was 2,689. Geography Wilson's Mills is located in north-central Johnston County at (35.577671, -78.355791). It is north of Smithfield, the county seat. U.S. Route 70 passes through the southern side of the town, leading northwest to Raleigh and southeast to Interstate 95 at Selma. Johnston County Career and Technical Leadership Academy (JCCTLA or CTLA) is a public vocational, early college high school in Smithfield, North Carolina, United States. It was established in 2016 and is part of the Johnston County School District. It operates at the Johnston Community College campus. History Johnston County Career and Technical Leadership Academy was established in 2016 and was originally located at Clayton High School. Started by Ed Croom, former superintendent of Johnston County School District, it is a high school "to raise academic achievement while focusing on career and technical education such as health care and computer engineering". By 2017, space limitations and schedule conflicts at Clayton led to a move to Johnston Community College, where the school replaced the county's successful two year Middle College program. Johnston Community College
Johnston Community College (JCC) is a public community college in Smithfield, North Carolina. It is located east of Raleigh, near the junction of I-95 and US 70. The main campus has 11 student buildings, an auditorium capable of seating 1,011 people, a 4,800-square-foot multi-use/banquet hall, four vocational shops/labs, a arboretum, and three ponds. Johnston Community College has off-campus centers throughout Johnston County, including the Cleveland Center, the Workforce Development Center, and the Howell Woods Environmental Learning Center, a wildlife preserve, and a teaching facility. West Johnston High School
West Johnston High School or WJHS is located in Benson, North Carolina. It is part of Johnston County School district and was established in the 2002-2003 school year to address crowding problems in other local high schools. History The first graduating class of West Johnston was in 2004, and the first class to graduate after full-four year completion was in 2006. Patricia Harris led the school for its first 4 years and worked to build the school's reputation as one of the top high schools in the state. In 2006–2007, Brookie Honeycutt took over as principal. South Johnston High School (also referred to as "South") is a high school for grades 9–12 located in Four Oaks, North Carolina, near Benson. The school was built in 1969 in order to integrate the area's "all-white" and "all-black" schools. The principal is William Weaver, one of the former assistant principals at the school. Smithfield-Selma High School is a public high school located in Smithfield, North Carolina. It is locally referred to as simply "SSS" (pronounced 'Triple S'). The school is part of Johnston County Schools. History Smithfield-Selma High School opened its doors in September 1969 and graduated its first class in June 1970. The school opened with about 1400 students in grades 10 through 12. There were 34% black and 66% white. There were 75 faculty members and support staff, two assistant principals, two secretaries and a bookkeeper. The creation of the school proved to be particularly challenging due to the merging of six high schools.
