Johnny Olszewski
John Peter Olszewski (December 21, 1929 – December 8, 1996) was an American football fullback. He was drafted in the first round (fourth overall) of the 1953 NFL Draft and played professionally for the Chicago Cardinals, the Washington Redskins and the Detroit Lions of the National Football League (NFL). He was selected to the Pro Bowl after the 1953 and 1955 seasons. Known as "Johnny O", he was among the first NFL players to wear the jersey number zero. He concluded his career in the American Football League (AFL) with the Denver Broncos in 1962. He played college football for the California Golden Bears, where he was named second-team All-American in 1952. He is still the No. 10 ground-gainer in school history with 2,504 yards. He was inducted into the California Athletics Hall of Fame in 1993. Fullback (gridiron Football)
A fullback (FB) is a position in the offensive backfield in gridiron football, and is one of the two running back positions along with the halfback. Fullbacks are typically larger than halfbacks and in most offensive schemes the fullback's duties are split among power running, pass catching, and blocking for both the quarterback and the other running back. Many great runners in the history of American football have been fullbacks, including Jim Brown, Marion Motley, Bronko Nagurski, Jim Taylor, Franco Harris, Larry Csonka, John Riggins, Christian Okoye, and Levi Jackson. However, many of these runners would retroactively be labeled as halfbacks, due to their position as the primary ball carrier; they were primarily listed as fullbacks due to their size and did not often perform the run-blocking duties expected of modern fullbacks. 1953 NFL Draft
The 1953 National Football League Draft was held on January 22, 1953, at Bellevue-Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia. Selections made by the folded Dallas Texans were assigned to the new Baltimore Colts. This was the seventh year that the first overall pick was a bonus pick determined by lottery, with the previous six winners (Chicago Bears in 1947, Washington Redskins in 1948, Philadelphia Eagles in 1949, Detroit Lions in 1950, New York Giants in 1951, and Los Angeles Rams in 1952) ineligible from the draw; it was won by the San Francisco 49ers, who selected end Harry Babcock.
