Johnny O'Neal (singer)
Johnny O'Neal was an American R&B singer best known as a member of Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm. He also sang with blues guitarist Earl Hooker. O'Neal used various pseudonyms such as Brother Bell, Burntface Brother, and Scarface Johnny. As a solo artist he recorded for King Records and Sun Records in the 1950s. He also formed his own group called Johnny O'Neal and the Hound Dogs. Career Born Johnny O'Neal Johnson, he became the lead singer of Ike Turner's band the Kings of Rhythm. Prior to the band recording "Rocket 88" (1951), O'Neal left the band to sign a solo contract with King Records. In January 1951, he recorded his debut "War Bound Blues" / "Ruth Ann" in Cincinnati which was released in March. Ike Turner
Izear Luster "Ike" Turner Jr. (November 5, 1931 – December 12, 2007) was an American musician, bandleader, songwriter, record producer, and talent scout. An early pioneer of 1950s rock and roll, he is best known for his work in the 1960s and 1970s with his then-wife Tina Turner as the leader of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. A native of Clarksdale, Mississippi, Turner began playing piano and guitar as a child and then formed the Kings of Rhythm as a teenager. His first recording, "Rocket 88" (credited to Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats), is considered a contender for the distinction of first rock and roll song. Sam Phillips
Samuel Cornelius Phillips (January 5, 1923 – July 30, 2003) was an American record producer. He was the founder of Sun Records and Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee, where he produced recordings by Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Howlin' Wolf. Phillips played a major role in the development of rock and roll during the 1950s, launching the career of Presley. In 1969, he sold Sun to Shelby Singleton. Phillips was the owner and operator of radio stations in Memphis; Florence, Alabama; and Lake Worth Beach, Florida. ''The Sun Sessions'' is a collection of early recordings that musician Ike Turner and his band the Kings of Rhythm recorded from 1951–1958 for Sun Records. Many of the recordings were previously unissued until Charly Records released the album ''Sun: The Roots Of Rock: Volume 3: Delta Rhythm Kings'' in 1976. The tracks on ''The Sun Sessions'' were digitally remastered and released by Varèse Sarabande in 2001. Recording In March 1951, Ike Turner and his Kings of Rhythm recorded at producer Sam Phillips' Memphis Recording Service. Phillips licensed the recordings to Chess Records. The first single, " Rocket 88," was supposed to be credited to Ike Turner and the Kings of Rhythm featuring Jackie Brenston. Andrew Odom
Andrew Odom (December 15, 1936 – December 23, 1991) was an American Chicago blues and electric blues singer and songwriter. Born in Denham Springs, Louisiana, United States, he is best known for the close resemblance of his singing style to that of Bobby Bland and B.B. King. He recorded three solo albums in his lifetime and performed regularly around Chicago and further afield until his death.
