Johnny Hughes (boxer)
John "Johnny" Hughes (born 1950) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer who played as a left wing-back at senior level for the Galway county team. Born in Mountbellew, County Galway, Hughes served his Gaelic football apprenticeship with the local club, moving upwards through the grades. An injury prevented him from appearing for the Galway minor team; however, he later spent three years with the under-21 side. He made his senior debut in various tournament games in 1973. Hughes played a key role in defence over the next decade, and won five Connacht medals, one National Football League medal and two All-Star awards. Hughes represented the Connacht inter-provincial team on a number of occasions and was a Railway Cup runner-up on two occasions. Mountbellew–Moylough GAA
Mountbellew–Moylough (Irish: ''An Creagán/Maugh Locha'') is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in County Galway, Ireland. The club is a member of the Galway GAA. The club was formerly known as Mountbellew before amalgamating with Moylough. Connacht ( ; ga, Connachta or ), is one of the provinces of Ireland, in the west of Ireland. Until the ninth century it consisted of several independent major Gaelic kingdoms (Uí Fiachrach, Uí Briúin, Uí Maine, Conmhaícne, and Delbhna). Between the reigns of Conchobar mac Taidg Mór (died 882) and his descendant, Aedh mac Ruaidri Ó Conchobair (reigned 1228–33), it became a kingdom under the rule of the Uí Briúin Aí dynasty, whose ruling sept adopted the surname Ua Conchobair. The 1983 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship was the 97th staging of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county Gaelic football tournament. The championship began on 15 May 1983 and ended on 18 September 1983. Offaly entered the championship as the defending champions, however, they were defeated by Dublin in the Leinster final. On 18 September 1983, Dublin won the championship following a 1-10 to 1-8 defeat of Galway in the All-Ireland final. This was their 21st All-Ireland title and their first in six championship seasons. Dublin's Barney Rock was the championship's top scorer with 6-27. Dublin's Tommy Drumm was the choice for Texaco Footballer of the Year. The Galway Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic Athletic Association competition between the top Gaelic football clubs in Galway. The GAA Interprovincial Championship ( ga, An Corn Idir-Chúigeach) or Railway Cup (''Corn an Iarnróid'') is the name of two annual Gaelic football and hurling competitions held between the provinces of Ireland. The Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster GAA teams are composed of the best players from the counties in each province. The games are organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association. The Railway Cup was a revival of the Railway Shield which ran from 1905 to 1907 (football) and from 1905 to 1908 (hurling). The Gaelic Athletic Association-Gaelic Players' Association All Stars Awards (often known simply as the All Stars) are awarded annually to the best player in each of the 15 playing positions in Gaelic football and hurling. Additionally, one player in each code is selected as Player of the Year. The awards were instituted in 1971. Since 2011 they have been presented jointly by the Gaelic Athletic Association and the representative body for inter-county players, the Gaelic Players Association. The Galway county football team ( ) represents Galway in men's Gaelic football and is governed by Galway GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association.
