John Yorke (producer)
John Roland Clifford Yorke (born 9 July 1962) is a British television producer and script editor, who was head of Channel 4 Drama 2003-2005, controller of BBC drama production 2006-2012 and MD of Company Pictures (2013-2015). Outside of television production, Yorke authored ''Into the Woods: How Stories Work and Why We Tell Them (2014)'', a best-selling screenwriting guide that proposes a five act structure to film and television narrative and draws from Yorke's research and experience. Career Background Yorke attended Newcastle University. He joined the BBC in 1986, working initially in radio as a studio manager and then as a producer on BBC Radio 5. Stepney
Stepney is a district in the East End of London in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The district is no longer officially defined, and is usually used to refer to a relatively small area. However, for much of its history the place name applied to a much larger manor and parish. Stepney Green is a remnant of a larger area of Common Land formerly known as Mile End Green. The area was built up rapidly in the 19th century, mainly to accommodate immigrant workers and displaced London poor, and developed a reputation for poverty, overcrowding, violence and political dissent. It was severely damaged during the Blitz, with over a third of housing totally destroyed; and then, in the 1960s, slum clearance and development replaced most residential streets with tower blocks and modern housing estates. Kim Medcalf
Kim Louise Medcalf (born 8 December 1973) is an English actress and singer. She is best known for taking over the role of Sam Mitchell in the long-running BBC soap opera, ''EastEnders'', between 2002 and 2005 and from 2022 onwards. Career ''EastEnders'' In late 2001, Medcalf took over the role of Sam Mitchell from Danniella Westbrook. She filmed her first scenes with Barbara Windsor in Spain, which aired in January 2002. She won the best newcomer award in 2002. Medcalf opted to leave ''EastEnders'' in 2005. Medcalf's final scenes were filmed in September 2005 and screened in November of that year. ''The Street'' is a British drama television series created by Jimmy McGovern and produced by Granada Television for the BBC. The series follows the lives of various residents of an unnamed street in Manchester and features an all-star cast including Timothy Spall, Jim Broadbent, Jane Horrocks, Bob Hoskins, and David Thewlis. ''The Street'' won both the British Academy Television Award for Best Drama Series and RTS Television Award for Drama Series twice, in 2007 and 2008. ''Bodies'' is a British television medical drama produced by Hat Trick Productions for the BBC. Created by Jed Mercurio, the series first broadcast on 23 June 2004, and is based on Mercurio's book of the same name. The series is centred on specialist registrar Rob Lake ( Max Beesley), who starts in a new post in the Obstetrics and gynaecology department at the fictional South Central Infirmary, under the guidance of consultant obstetrician Roger Hurley (Patrick Baladi). BBC Studios Writers’ Academy is a training scheme for writers of television drama. The course was originally run by the British Broadcasting Corporation from 2005 to 2013. Omagh (film)
''Omagh'' is a 2004 film dramatising the events surrounding the Omagh bombing and its aftermath, co-produced by Irish state broadcaster RTÉ and UK network Channel 4, and directed by Pete Travis. It was first shown on television in both countries in May, 2004. Michael Gallagher, whose son Aiden (Paul Kelly) was killed in the bombing, is played by Gerard McSorley, originally from Omagh. Out of respect for the residents of the town, it was filmed on location in Navan, County Meath, Republic of Ireland. The film ends with the Julie Miller song ''Broken Things'', which was performed by local singer Juliet Turner at the memorial for the victims of the Omagh bombing. Reception Rotten Tomatoes reported that 88% of critics gave the film positive reviews, with an average score of 7.2/10, however this is based upon a sample of only 8 reviews.
