John XXIII Institute
The John XXIII Salesian Institute () is a private Catholic college-preparatory school located in Montevideo, Uruguay. History It was founded in 1964 by the Salesian order and members of the Marist Brothers and the Sons of the Holy Family, with the aim of providing a Catholic and private education in the last years of high school. In the first place, it was intended to name the institution in homage to some outstanding Catholic figure in the History of Uruguay, as the options of Francisco Bauzá or Juan Zorrilla de San Martín were already used by other educational centers, it was decided to name it in honor of Pope John XXIII. Since its foundation, the Institute had been exclusively for men, however, in 1973 it began to admit women. In addition, years later the first year of high school (tenth grade) was incorporated. Cordón
Cordón is a central ''barrio'' (neighbourhood or district) of Montevideo, Uruguay, located East of the Centro. Its main avenue is 18 de Julio Avenue. History Cordón was the first neighborhood to be created outside the walls of the old Citadel of Montevideo. In its origins it was known as "''El Cardal''", due to the fact that thistles () grew in the fields dedicated to the cultivation of corn. It was a large vacant lot that extended to the other side of the wall, behind the "''Ejidos''", that is, after the area of open land that was used for the defense of the Citadel. In 1765 the Spanish Crown ordered Bartolomé Mitre Martínez to delineate approximately 60 blocks for population. Francisco Bauzá
Francisco Bauzá (1849–1899) was a Uruguayan political figure and historian. Background He was the son of Uruguayan independence fighter Rufino Bauzá. He was married with María Schiaffino. He was associated with the Uruguayan Colorado Party. Public offices He served as a Deputy, Senator, and Government Minister. He also served as Uruguayan minister to Brazil. A noted Roman Catholic in a party which was increasingly secularist, Bauzá opposed the Varela educational reforms which his own party backed. Daniel Fernando Sturla Berhouet, SDB (born 4 July 1959 in Montevideo) is a Uruguayan Roman Catholic prelate and the archbishop of Montevideo. Biography Sturla was born in a Uruguayan middle-class family. His parents died when he was a teenager. His eldest brother Martín was an important politician at the end of the 20th century. He attended John XXIII Institute run by the Salesians of Don Bosco, in Montevideo. He entered the Salesian novitiate in 1979 and made his first religious profession on January 31, 1980. He studied theology at what was then called the Bishop Mariano Soler Theological Institute of Uruguay, and on November 21, 1987, he was ordained a priest. After his ordination he served as vicar of the Salesian novitiate and postnovitiate, director of the Salesian aspirantate, master of novices, director of the John XXIII Institute, and professor of Church history. Álvaro Luis Delgado Ceretta (born 11 March 1969) is a Uruguayan veterinarian and politician of the National Party (PN), who served as the 18th Secretary of the Presidency of the Republic from 2020 to 2023.
