John Woodruff (athlete)
John Youie "Long John" Woodruff (July 5, 1915 – October 30, 2007) was an American middle-distance runner, winner of the 800 meter event at the 1936 Summer Olympics. Early life Woodruff was only a freshman at the University of Pittsburgh in 1936 when he placed second at the National Amateur Athletic Union meet and first at the Olympic Trials (in the heat 1:49.9; WR 1:49.8), earning a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. Woodruff was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. Despite his inexperience, he was the favorite in the Olympic 800 meter run, and he did not disappoint. In one of the most exciting races in Olympic history, Woodruff became boxed in by other runners and was forced to stop running. He then came from behind to win in 1:52.9. John Woodruff (representative)
John Woodruff (February 12, 1826 – May 20, 1868) was a U.S. Representative from Connecticut. Early life Born in West Hartford, Connecticut, Woodruff was the son of Timothy (1798–1835) and Sylvia Woodruff (1798–1868). His parents were fourth cousins, once removed. His paternal great-grandfather, Timothy Woodruff (1732–1788), served as a Captain during the French and Indian War. His maternal grandfather and maternal great-grandfathers all served as Captains in the American Revolutionary War: Solomon Woodruff (1763–1822), Noah Woodruff (1730–1790) and Eliphalet Curtis (1736–1806). He was also a descendant of Governor Thomas Welles. Woodruff received limited schooling. In 1835, he moved to Catskill, New York. He returned to Connecticut in 1841 and settled in Bristol, where he worked in a clock factory until 1845, when he moved to New Haven. John Woodruff (talent Manager)
John Philip Woodruff OAM is a former Australian talent manager, record label owner and music magazine owner. He managed Flowers/Icehouse, the Angels, Diesel, Baby Animals and Savage Garden. He combined with fellow managers to found Dirty Pool as a booking agency and management company in 1978. Woodruff established a magazine ''The Music Network'' in 1994. For his work in the local music industry he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the ARIA Music Awards of 2007. He was described by music journalist Christie Eliezer as one of seven movers and shakers of the Australian Music Industry in the book ''High Voltage Rock 'n' Roll'' (2007). On Australia Day (26 January) 2008 Woodruff was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for "service to the popular music industry, particularly as a manager, promoter and mentor of musical acts."
