John Willsey
John Willsey is a Canadian curler from Orillia, Ontario. He currently skips his own team out of Oakville, Ontario. Career Youth In 2012, Willsey won the Ontario Bantam Mixed championship, playing third for Sarah Nuhn. While attending the University of Waterloo, Willsey skipped the Waterloo men's curling team for three of the four years on the team. In his first year on the team, he won a silver medal for Waterloo at the 2016 OUA championship and led Waterloo to a 2-5 record at the 2016 CIS/CCA Curling Championships, the national university championship. After winning a bronze medal at the OUA championship, he led Waterloo once again at the 2018 national university championship. There, Waterloo would finish the round robin in first place with a 5-2 record. In the playoffs however, Waterloo lost both of their games, and settled for fourth place. Orillia Secondary School
Orillia Secondary School, was established in 2015, following the 2013 merger of Orillia District Collegiate & Vocational Institute and Park Street Collegiate Institute. The school has a population of about 1000 students. The new school building was built between 2014 and 2016, and is equipped with a triple gymnasium, technology rooms, a library, and cafeteria. The principal is Peter Bowman. After the 2012–2013 academic year, Orillia District Collegiate & Vocational Institute was merged with Park Street Collegiate Institute, which was demolished so that a new school could be built on its former site, at the intersection of Park Street and Collegiate Drive. Park Street Collegiate Institute
Park Street Collegiate Institute (PSCI) was a secondary school located in Orillia, Ontario, Canada. It was built in 1961 to help with the overflow of students from Orillia District Collegiate & Vocational Institute. In March 2008, a review process was to have begun to consolidate Orillia's three public high schools into two buildings as a result of cost of maintenance of the aging buildings and the declining enrolment at PSCI. Park Street had a capacity of 1011 students but, as of 2006, fewer than 900 students were enrolled. On 28 November 2007, a bomb threat written on a mirror in a student washroom caused great concern and students were kept in classes in a school lockdown for the morning as police cleared the building room by room. Nothing suspicious was found and students returned to classes following an extended lunch break. 2023 Ontario Tankard
The 2023 Ontario Tankard, (known as the Port Elgin Chrysler 2023 Ontario Tankard Presented by Bruce Power for sponsorship reasons), the provincial men's curling championship for Southern Ontario, was held from January 24 to 29 at The Plex in Port Elgin, Ontario. The winning Mike McEwen rink represented Ontario at the 2023 Tim Hortons Brier on home soil in London, Ontario where they finished fourth place losing in the 3 vs. 4 Page Playoff game to Wild Card #1 6–3. It was the second straight year that the event was held in Port Elgin. The 2022 event had been subject to COVID-19 restrictions, capping attendance at 500 people per draw, so the organizers requested that CurlON hold the event in Port Elgin again. 2020 Ontario Tankard
The 2020 Ontario Tankard, the provincial men's curling championship for Southern Ontario, was held from January 28 to February 2 at the Ed Lumley Arena in Cornwall, Ontario. The winning John Epping rink represented Ontario at the 2020 Tim Hortons Brier in Kingston, Ontario. The event was held in conjunction with the 2020 Ontario Scotties Tournament of Hearts, the women's provincial championship. John Epping won his second Ontario Tankard by defeating Glenn Howard 8–3 in the final. Qualification process Nine teams qualified from two cash spiels (two each), an open qualifier (two teams), plus the top two southern Ontario teams in the CTRS standings (as of December 1, 2019). CurlON
CurlON (formerly the Ontario Curling Association) is the governing body of curling in Southern Ontario. Northern Ontario is governed by the Northern Ontario Curling Association (NOCA). The CurlON sends a team to represent Team Ontario at all major Canadian Championships. The NOCA sends a separate team to all of these events. CurlON was founded in 1875. CTRS Standings
The Canadian Team Ranking System (CTRS) is a point system used by Curling Canada to rank men's and women's curling teams across Canada. They are determined through points earned in various curling bonspiels held worldwide throughout the season. CTRS points are the basis of the World Curling Tour's Order of Merit and are also used as criteria in identifying teams that qualify for the Canadian Olympic Curling Trials. Beginning in 2018, the top two CTRS teams that do not otherwise qualify for the Scotties Tournament of Hearts or Tim Hortons Brier will earn the right to compete in a play-in game for a wildcard berth in those tournaments.
