John William Elliott Maikai
Major John William Elliott Maikai ( – May 27, 1860) was a lawyer, politician and military officer of the Kingdom of Hawaii. He served as aide to King Kamehameha III and was the ''Akukana Kenela'' or Adjutant General of the Hawaiian Army during the reigns of King Kamehameha III and Kamehameha IV. Life and career He was the son of a man named Ehu, a recipient of the Great Māhele who owned land in the Mānoa Valley. Maikai became part of the early generations of Hawaiian youths educated at the Lahainaluna Seminary on the island of Maui by the American Protestant missionary Lorrin Andrews. He graduated in 1845 with high honors. He initially went into governmental service as a secretary of Mataio Kekūanāoʻa, the Governor of Oahu. He later became a lawyer and was appointed a district justice, although he continued his law practice and working as a member of the Hawaiian bar. American diplomat David L. Kingdom Of Hawaii
The Hawaiian Kingdom, or Kingdom of Hawaiʻi ( Hawaiian: ''Ko Hawaiʻi Pae ʻĀina''), was a sovereign state located in the Hawaiian Islands. The country was formed in 1795, when the warrior chief Kamehameha the Great, of the independent island of Hawaiʻi, conquered the independent islands of Oʻahu, Maui, Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi and unified them under one government. In 1810, the whole Hawaiian archipelago became unified when Kauaʻi and Niʻihau joined the Hawaiian Kingdom voluntarily. Two major dynastic families ruled the kingdom: the House of Kamehameha and the House of Kalākaua. The kingdom won recognition from the major European powers. The United States became its chief trading partner and watched over it to prevent other powers (such as Britain and Japan) from asserting hegemony. ''The Polynesian'' was a 4-8 page weekly newspaper published in Honolulu, that had two periods of publication: from June 6, 1840, to December 11, 1841, and then from May 18, 1844, to February 6, 1864. From 1845 to 1861, it was the official publication of the government of the Hawaiian Kingdom. ''The Polynesian'' was the leading newspaper in Oahu in the mid-1800s. History James Jackson Jarves founded the newspaper in June 1840, running it with funds from the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, advertisements, and subscriptions. However, it was not profitable, and was closed after two and half years of publication. Written for Honolulu's foreign residents, it was among the first Hawaiian newspapers to feature puff pieces that were barely disguised advertising. Edward Kamakau Lilikalani
Edward Kamakau Lilikalani (August 5, 1852 – November 8, 1917) was a political protégé of King Kalākaua of Hawaiʻi. He served more than a decade in the lower house of the Legislature of the Hawaiian Kingdom, and after nearly two decades out of office, was elected to the same legislative body under the Territory of Hawaii. Lilikalani was a member of both Kalākaua's Privy Council of State and Liliʻuokalani's Privy Council of State. Kalākaua decorated him with the Royal Order of Oceania, Order of Oceania, Order of Kalakaua, and Order of Kapiolani. HHMS ''Kaimiloa'' was the first and only ship of the Hawaiian Royal Navy. The ship was formerly the ''Explorer'', a 170-ton schooner, built in England in 1871. ''Kaimiloa'' sailed from Hawaii to Samoa and other Pacific islands in 1887 in an effort by King Kalākaua to form a confederation of Polynesian states to counteract Colonial empire, European imperialism. Royal Guards Of Hawaii
The Royal Guard of the Hawaii National Guard is an Air National Guard ceremonial unit which is uniformed in a manner similar to the royal bodyguard of the Kingdom of Hawaii of the late 19th century. The original 50-man unit had been disbanded by King Lunalilo after the barrack mutiny of 1873, reestablished by King Kalakaua, and finally abolished after the monarchy fell during the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom at the end of the 19th century. The current Royal Guards were raised in 1962 as a purely ceremonial unit. Each guardsman is a Hawaiian resident, a member of the Hawaii Air National Guard, of full or partial Hawaiian descent. The unit appears in support of the Governor at official State and other public functions; less frequently, the unit appears at ceremonies involving descendants of former Hawaiian royalty.
