John William Balfour Paul
Lieutenant Colonel John William Balfour Paul (4 June 1873 – 23 April 1957) was a Scottish soldier and officer of arms in the Court of the Lord Lyon. He was the son of James Balfour Paul and brother of Arthur Forman Balfour Paul, and educated at Sedbergh School. He was Falkland Pursuivant Extraordinary from 1927 to 1939, and Marchmont Herald from 1939 to 1957. In 1951 he was appointed a Vice-Lieutenant of Midlothian. Lieutenant colonel (Lt Col), is a rank in the British Army and Royal Marines which is also used in many Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth countries. The rank is superior to Major (United Kingdom), major, and subordinate to Colonel (United Kingdom), colonel. The comparable Royal Navy rank is Commander (Royal Navy), commander, and the comparable rank in the Royal Air Force and many Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth air forces is Wing commander (rank), wing commander. The rank insignia in the British Army and Royal Marines, as well as many Commonwealth countries, is a crown above a Order of the Bath, four-pointed "Bath" star, also colloquially referred to as a British Army officer rank insignia, "pip". James Monteith Grant
Sir James Monteith Grant FRHSC (Hon) (19 October 1903 – 1 December 1981) was Lord Lyon King of Arms of Scotland from 1969 to 1981. Educated at the Edinburgh Academy and the University of Edinburgh, where he studied law, he was appointed a Writer to the Signet (WS) in 1927. His first heraldic appointment was as Carrick Pursuivant in 1946. He was promoted to Marchmont Herald in 1957 and then to Lord Lyon in 1969. He was also Secretary to the Order of the Thistle from 1971 until 1981. From his retirement as Lord Lyon in 1981, he again held the post of Marchmont Herald until his death later that year. He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (FSA Scot), a Knight of the Venerable Order of St John (KStJ) from 1970, and a Commander 2nd Class of the Order of the Polar Star (KNO2kl) of Sweden from 1975.
