John Whelan (Irish Politician)
John Whelan (born 24 March 1961) is an Irish Labour Party politician and former member of Seanad Éireann. A former journalist, Whelan was editor of the ''Leinster Express'' newspaper. He joined the Labour Party in 2010 and was selected as that party's candidate for the Laois–Offaly constituency at the 2011 general election. The selection convention was highly controversial, with the convention itself ending after 15 minutes in "total chaos". A number of members left the Labour Party and joined the Socialist Party and contested the constituency unsuccessfully while a number of others canvassed for Sinn Féin candidate Brian Stanley. Whelan polled 5,802 votes (7.8%) being beaten to the final seat by Fianna Fáil's Seán Fleming. He was elected to Seanad Éireann on the Labour Panel in April 2011. The ''Offaly Express'' is an online newspaper and former print newspaper in Ireland that serves County Offaly. The paper is part of the Iconic Newspapers Group. The offices of the ''Offaly Express'' are based in Portlaoise. The paper was founded in 1984. Justin Kelly is editor of the ''Offaly Express''. In June 2012, it was announced that Johnston Press Ireland were to close the ''Offaly Express'' print newspaper version with the loss of 8 jobs. The final edition was published on 5 July 2012 after 29 years. The paper was published on a weekly basis every Wednesday and accepted submissions via e-mail including articles and pictures relevant to the county. John Drennan
John Drennan (real name Sean Armstrong) is an Irish political journalist and writer. He is a columnist for the '' Sunday Independent'', an occasional TV panelist and a frequent contributor to radio shows. From County Laois he was educated at St. Patrick's College, Maynooth where he studied for an arts degree and worked as a part-time postman to fund his shooting and fishing hobbies. A gun enthusiast and writer of dole diaries, he doesn't hide his Fine Gael background and leanings, and often refers to himself warmly as an "Old Blueshirt". In 2015, Drennan announced that he was leaving his role with the ''Sunday Independent'' and had joined Renua Ireland — a new anti-abortion political party founded by Lucinda Creighton TD — to work as their Communications Director. Seán Fleming (born 27 February 1958) is an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who has served as Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs since December 2022. He previously served as Minister of State at the Department of Finance from July 2020 to December 2022. He has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Laois–Offaly constituency since 2020, and previously from 1997 to 2016 and from 2016 to 2020 for the Laois constituency. He previously served as Chair of the Public Accounts Committee from 2016 to 2020. Fleming is an accountant by profession. He was educated at University College Dublin. Brian Stanley (born January 1958) is an Irish Sinn Féin politician who has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Laois–Offaly constituency since the 2020 general election, and previously from 2011 to 2016 and from 2016 to 2020 for the Laois constituency. He was appointed Chair of the Public Accounts Committee in July 2020. He unsuccessfully contested the 2002 and 2007 general elections in Laois-Offaly. Stanley was elected at the 1999 local elections as a member of Portlaoise Town Council, and was re-elected in 2004, and in 2009. Seanad Éireann (, ; "Senate of Ireland") is the upper house of the Oireachtas (the Irish legislature), which also comprises the President of Ireland and Dáil Éireann (the lower house).
