John Wainwright (computer Scientist)
John Wainwright is a computer scientist, born in Australia, who has pioneered the development of pure object-based computer languages. He is the principal architect of two computer languages, ScriptX (1992–1996) and MaxScript (1996). In 1992, Wainwright sold Apple Computer his structural framework for an object based, language and virtual machine operating system called Objects in C. He became the lead architect for ScriptX, a language and media player developed by Kaleida Labs. After Kaleida Labs closed its doors in 1996, Wainwright went on to serve as the principal architect of MaxScript, the scripting language of Autodesk 3ds Max. ScriptX
ScriptX was a multimedia-oriented development environment created in 1990 by Kaleida Labs; it was discontinued as a product by the time Kaleida Labs went out of business in 1996. Unlike packages such as Macromedia Director, ScriptX was not an authoring tool for creating multimedia titles, although it did come with a built-in authoring tool. Rather, it was a general-purpose, object-oriented, multi-platform development environment that included a dynamic language and a class library. ScriptX was as applicable for implementing client–server applications as it is for authoring multimedia titles. Kaleida Labs
Kaleida Labs formed in 1991 to produce the multimedia cross-platform Kaleida Media Player and the object oriented scripting language ScriptX that was used to program its behavior. The system was aimed at the production of interactive CD ROM titles, an area of major effort in the early 1990s. When the system was delivered in 1994, it had relatively high system requirements and memory footprint, and lacked a native PowerPC version on the Mac platform. Around the same time, rapid changes in the market, especially the expansion of the World Wide Web and the Java programming language, pushed the interactive CD market into a niche role.
