John W. Drummond
John Willie Drummond (September 29, 1919 – September 3, 2016) was an American politician. He was a Democratic member of the South Carolina Senate, who represented the 10th District from 1966 through 2008. He was also a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1965 through 1966. Early life and military service One of seven children of James William and Fannie Smith Drummond, John Drummond was born in Greenwood, South Carolina, though at some point the family moved to Ninety Six, South Carolina. In World War II, Drummond held the rank of captain and piloted a P-47D Thunderbolt with the nose art "Raid Hot Mama" 405th Fighter Group. He was shot down over in 1944 near Giéville, France. During his time of service Drummond received the Decorated Distinguished Flying Cross, two Purple Hearts, nine Air Medals, and three Battle Stars. Greenwood is a city in and the county seat of Greenwood County, South Carolina, United States. The population in the 2020 United States Census was 22,545 down from 23,222 at the 2010 census. The city is home to Lander University. Geography and Climate Greenwood is located slightly northwest of the center of Greenwood County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which are land and , or 0.72%, are water. U.S. Routes 25, 178 and 221 pass through the eastern side of the city, bypassing the downtown area. US 25 leads north to Greenville and south to Augusta, Georgia, US 178 leads northwest to Anderson and southeast to Saluda, and US 221 leads northeast to Laurens and southwest to McCormick. Laurens County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, its population was 67,539. Its county seat is Laurens. Laurens County is included in the Greenville-Anderson- Mauldin, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Laurens County was formed on March 12, 1785. Marshall Burns Williams (January 17, 1912 – December 28, 1995) was an American politician who served as a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives and the South Carolina Senate.
