John W. Anderson (sailor)
Commodore John William Anderson (February 14, 1899 – February 15, 1976) was the longest serving captain of the , the fastest ocean liner in history. In 1952, he relieved Commodore Harry Manning as master of the superliner after the recordbreaking voyage on which she broke the translantic speed record previously held by the and captured the Blue Riband for the United States. Early life and career Anderson was born in 1899 in Jersey City, New Jersey, to parents of Norwegian and English descent. His grandfather spent twenty-five years at sea in Norwegian sailing ships. The War Shipping Administration (WSA) was a World War II emergency war agency of the US government, tasked to purchase and operate the civilian shipping tonnage the United States needed for fighting the war. Both shipbuilding under the Maritime Commission and ship allocation under the WSA to Army, Navy or civilian needs were closely coordinated though Vice Admiral Emory S. MS Kungsholm (1928)
MS ''Kungsholm'' was an ocean liner built in Germany by Blohm & Voss for the Swedish American Line from 1928 to 1941 on transatlantic services from Gothenburg to New York City as well as cruising out of New York. In Second World War the US Government requisitioned it as the troopship ''John Ericsson''. After the war the Italian Home Lines bought her, renamed her ''Italia'' and operated her as a transatlantic liner and cruise ship. In the 1960s she changed hands again to become the hotel ship ''Imperial Bahama''. She was scrapped in Spain in 1965. Trans-Atlantic passenger service ''Kungsholm'' operated on the transatlantic service with some cruise operations just prior to World War II.
