John Verney, 1st Viscount Fermanagh
John Verney, 1st Viscount Fermanagh (5 November 1640 – 23 June 1717), known as Sir John Verney, 2nd Baronet, between 1696 and 1703, was an English peer, merchant and Tory politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1710 to 1717. Early life Verney was the second and only surviving son of Sir Ralph Verney, 1st Baronet, and his wife Mary Blacknall, daughter of John Blacknall. He accompanied his father into his French exile, aged eight, and was educated at Blois for the following five years. After the family's return to England, he joined James Fleetwood's school at Barn Elms and in 1655 went to another school in Kensington. Thereafter Verney worked for a Levant merchant, making expeditions to Mesopotamia and Cyprus. On 27 May 1680, he married Elizabeth Palmer, daughter of Ralph Palmer, at Westminster Abbey After her death in 1686, Verney married a second time to Mary Lawley, daughter of Sir Francis Lawley, 2nd Baronet, on 10 July 1692, also at Westminster Abbey. John Verney (judge)
Sir John Verney, (23 October 16995 August 1741) of Compton Verney, Warwickshire, was a British barrister, judge and Tory and then Whig politician who sat in the House of Commons from between 1722 and 1741. Early life Verney was born in Brasted, Kent on 23 October 1699, the fifth son of George Verney, 12th Baron Willoughby de Broke and his wife Margaret Heath, daughter of Sir John Heath of Brasted. He matriculated at New College, Oxford on 11 October 1714, aged 15, and was admitted at the Middle Temple in 1715. He was called to the Bar ex gratia in 1721. On 16 September 1724 he married Abigail Harley, the daughter of Sir Edward Harley, the younger brother of Queen Anne's Tory minister, Robert Harley, created Earl of Oxford. Career In an attempt to gain contacts for his work as a barrister, Verney decided to stand for Parliament. John Verney, 20th Baron Willoughby De Broke
Air Commodore John Henry Peyto Verney, 20th Baron Willoughby de Broke, MC, AFC (21 May 1896, London – 25 May 1986) was a British peer. Background and education The son of Richard Verney, 19th Baron Willoughby de Broke, and Marie Frances Lisette Hanbury, Verney was educated at Eton and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He succeeded his father in 1923. Military career During the First World War, he was awarded the Military Cross (1918). At the end of hostilities, he became aide-de-camp to the Governor of Bombay, Sir George Lloyd, from 1919 to 1922 and adjutant of the Warwickshire Yeomanry from 1925 to 1929. In 1939 he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire, a post he held until 1967. Between the wars both Lord and Lady Willoughby were keen aviators with their own aeroplane and private aerodrome at their home in Kineton, Warwickshire.
