John Towner
John William Towner (19 November 1933 – 19 January 2023) was an Australian rules footballer who played 87 senior games for the Essendon Football Club from 1953 to 1959. Career Recruited from the Ascot Vale Football Club, Towner made his debut for Essendon Firsts as a reserve in the second home-and-away round match against South Melbourne at the Lake Oval on 2 May 1953. In his first year, he played 11 senior matches, including the Firsts Semi-Final team that lost 5.11 (41) to Footscray's 6.13 (49). He played 16 senior games in 1954, a single game in 1955, 10 games in 1956 (plus 1 night game), 16 games in 1957 (plus 1 night gameMaplestone (1996), p.538. The Essendon Football Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is a professional Australian rules football club. The club plays in the Australian Football League (AFL), the game's premier competition. Surfers Paradise Australian Football Club (nicknamed The Demons) is a Gold Coast based club competing in the AFL Queensland QAFL Australian rules football competition. History The Surfers Paradise Australian Football Club was established in 1961 and competed in the Gold Coast Australian Football League's official inaugural season in 1962 with their home ground situated a few blocks from the Pacific Ocean on Beach Road. The club captured its first senior premiership in 1963 and back-to-back-to-back senior GCAFL flags followed in 1967, 1968 & 1969. More senior premierships were won by Surfers Paradise in 1972 & 1974. Fred Goldsmith (Australian Rules Footballer)
Fred Goldsmith (20 August 1932 – 13 April 2017) was an Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Goldsmith as a seventeen year old in 1950, once kicked 29 goals in a match for Spotswood against Kingsville in the Footscray District Football League. His club was zoned to South Melbourne. VFL Career A fireman, Goldsmith started his career in 1951 as a half forward flanker, having been recruited by South Melbourne from Spotswood. In 1952, he was shifted to fullback; and, in 1955, he became the first ever (and so far, only) specialist fullback to win the Brownlow Medal. The 1957 VFL season was the 61st season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 20 April until 21 September, and comprised an 18-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs.
