John Sutherland (producer)
John Sutherland (September 11, 1910 – February 17, 2001) was an American film producer. Sutherland voiced the adult Bambi in the 1942 film ''Bambi''. Sutherland produced 45 films from 1945–1973. Many of his films were instructional cartoons produced for Harding College extolling the socioeconomic concept of capitalism and delivering a political message on the benefits of both corporate and individual liberty, and the drawbacks of government intervention, particularly with ''Make Mine Freedom'' and ''Fresh Laid Plans''. Life Sutherland was born on September 11, 1910, in Williston, North Dakota. Film career Sutherland moved to Los Angeles, California, to work in the film industry. While in Los Angeles, Sutherland married Paula Winslowe on September 16, 1939, and had four children. The Most Important Person
''The Most Important Person'' is an animation/live action series of 66 short subjects of important topics in the lives of children. They were produced in 1972 by Sutherland Learning Associates. From 1972 to 1975, these shorts were seen as part of CBS's ''Captain Kangaroo'' program. The husband and wife team, Dan and Elaine Weisburd, were the creative geniuses behind The Most Important Person. They created, directed, wrote the stories, composed the songs, recorded the voices for the series. The main characters were an ostrich named Fumble, the fur-covered Hairy, the loquacious Bird and two children, Mike and Nicola. From 1975 to 1981, these shorts were later syndicated to local television stations, mostly independent stations that ran large amounts of non-CG animated cartoons and other children's programming. The short explains the fundamentals of the petroleum industry and how petroleum products enrich everyday life in the United States of America, as well as the benefits of a free market economy. Synopsis Destination Earth begins on the planet Mars, where the emperor Ogg (reminiscent of Stalin) is addressing an arena of his subjects. Prior to this, Martian society is shown with virtually everything having puns akin to Ogg and billboards extolling "our glorious leader". The Martians are "invited" to attend a speech at a stadium, where one Martian who tries to run away is "convinced" otherwise by being fired at by laser rifles. ''Make Mine Freedom'' is a 1948 American animated anti-communist propaganda cartoon created by John Sutherland Productions for the Extension Department of Harding College (now Harding University). Financed with a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the cartoon was the first in a series of pro-free enterprise films produced by Sutherland for Harding. The cartoon depicts a satire of perceived life under collectivist ideology. Production background Around 1947, the Sloan Foundation provided a grant of between $300,000 and $600,000 to Harding College to produce cartoons that promoted the American way and uplifted American business philosophy. Staff at Harding originally approached Walt Disney Productions, but were referred to John Sutherland, who left the company in 1940, shortly before the Disney animators' strike.
