John Sutherland (Manitoba Politician)
John Sutherland (December 23, 1837 – May 31, 1922) was a farmer and political figure in Manitoba. He represented Kildonan from 1871 to 1874 and from 1875 to 1878 in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba The Legislative Assembly of Manitoba (french: Assemblée législative du Manitoba) is the deliberative assembly of the Manitoba Legislature in the Canadian province of Manitoba. Fifty-seven members are elected to this assembly at provincial gen .... He was born at Kildonan, Manitoba, the son of Alexander Sutherland and Christy McBeth. Sutherland was superintendent for the Old Kildonan Sunday School. In 1862, he married Flora Polson. Sutherland was named Minister of Public Works but refused the office, having differences of opinion with other cabinet members. He was buried in Kildonan. Kildonan (Manitoba Electoral District)
Kildonan was a provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba. The boundaries for the riding maintained their location through the 2008 redistribution. History Kildonan riding (1870–1899) The original Kildonan riding was created at the time of the province's establishment in 1870. It was dominated by Manitoba's "old settler" population (i.e., English-speaking families who had lived in the Red River Settlement for many years before the province's creation). There was a large "mixed blood" aboriginal population in the riding, and many of its residents were also of Scottish or partly Scottish ancestry. From 1886 to 1888, the riding was incorporated into "Kildonan and St. Paul" riding. Kildonan was a hotly contested riding between the Conservatives and Liberals following the establishment of party government in 1888. The Legislative Assembly of Manitoba (french: Assemblée législative du Manitoba) is the deliberative assembly of the Manitoba Legislature in the Canadian province of Manitoba. Fifty-seven members are elected to this assembly at provincial general elections, all in single-member constituencies with first-past-the-post voting. Bills passed by the Legislative Assembly are given royal assent by the King of Canada in Right of Manitoba, represented by the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba. The Manitoba Legislative Building is located in central Winnipeg. The Premier of Manitoba is Heather Stefanson and the current Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba is Myrna Driedger; both of whom belong to the Progressive Conservative Party. Historically, the Legislature of Manitoba had another chamber, the Legislative Council of Manitoba, but this was abolished in 1876, just six years after the province was formed.
