John Sudworth
John Sudworth ( zh, c=沙磊) is a British journalist. He was previously the Beijing correspondent for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and is currently a North American correspondent for the network. He had lived and worked in China for nine years. His wife, Yvonne Murray, is a reporter for the Irish public broadcaster RTÉ. In 2017, Sudworth and his camera crew were attacked and forced to sign a confession in a Chinese village. In 2020, Sudworth won a George Polk Award for his reporting on the Xinjiang internment camps. Yvonne Murray is an Irish journalist. She is the current Global Security Reporter based in New York City, New York for RTÉ News since December 2022. She previously reported for RTÉ News on China, Chinese affairs from Taipei, Taiwan. Career Murray previously worked for the BBC, British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The George Polk Awards in Journalism are a series of American journalism awards presented annually by Long Island University in New York in the United States. A writer for Idea Lab, a group blog hosted on the website of PBS, described the award as "one of only a couple of journalism prizes that means anything". Xinjiang Internment Camps
The Xinjiang internment camps, officially called vocational education and training centers ( zh, 职业技能教育培训中心, Zhíyè jìnéng jiàoyù péixùn zhōngxīn) by the government of China, are internment camps operated by the government of Xinjiang and the Chinese Communist Party Provincial Standing Committee. Human Rights Watch says that they have been used to indoctrinate Uyghurs and other Muslims since 2017 as part of a " people's war on terror", a policy announced in 2014. The camps have been criticized by the governments of many countries and human rights organizations for alleged human rights abuses, including mistreatment, rape, and torture, with some of them alleging genocide.
