John Aikman Stewart
John Aikman Stewart (August 26, 1822 – December 18, 1926) was a New York City banker who during the administration of Grover Cleveland replenished the nation's gold supply by issuing new bonds. He was also the third person in its history to serve as acting President of Princeton University from 1910 to 1912. He also invested in the founding of The United States Trust Company, United States Trust Company, a precursor to Bank of America, and was its secretary from 1853 to 1864. Biography Stewart was born on August 26, 1822. He graduated from Columbia College (New York), Columbia College in 1840. During the presidency of Grover Cleveland he replenished the nation's gold supply by organizing a syndicate that bought $50,000,000 in bonds. He died on December 18, 1926, and was the oldest surviving Columbia University, Columbia alumnus at that time. John Stewart (New South Wales Colonial Politician)
John Stewart (1 October 1810 – 30 July 1896) was an English-born Australian politician. He was born in Northumberland to estate agent Malcolm Stewart and Elizabeth Scott. He graduated from the Royal Veterinary College at Edinburgh in 1827 and was a professor at the Andersonian University in Glasgow from 1834 to 1840. In 1841 he migrated to Sydney, where he married Sarah Pringle on 1 November 1842; they had four children. He established a practice which he ran until 1852, when he retired to Keira Vale. He moved back to Sydney in 1866, when he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Illawarra. John Stewart (after 1670 – 22 April 1748) of Sorbie, Wigtown was a Scottish soldier and politician who sat in the Scottish Parliament from 1702 to 1707 and in the British House of Commons between 1707 and 1727. Stewart was born after 1670, the 3rd surviving son of Alexander Stewart, 3rd Earl of Galloway and his wife Lady Mary Douglas, daughter of James Douglas, 2nd Earl of Queensberry He was educated at Glasgow University in 1687 and then joined the army. He was an ensign in the 3rd Foot Guards in 1691, a captain-lieutenant in April 1692, and captain and lieutenant-colonel in July 1692. John "Jock" Skinner Stewart (23 April 1902 – 5 February 1973) was a New Zealand politician of the Labour Party. Biography Early life and career Stewart was born in Greenock, Scotland and served in the British Army during World War I. He then emigrated to New Zealand when he was 24. He later gained employment with the Auckland Transport Board as a clerk. During World War II he joined the military and was given a staff job as his medical grading prevented him from going abroad. At the end of 1942 he was released from service. Political career In 1935 he was elected to the Auckland City Council on a Labour Party ticket where he was chairman of the Library Committee. John Benjamin Stewart (19 November 1924 – 11 June 2015) was a Liberal party member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was an author, expert on parliamentary procedure and professor. He was first elected at the Antigonish—Guysborough riding in the 1962 general election then re-elected there in 1963 and 1965. After riding boundary changes, Stewart campaigned for a seat at South Western Nova in the 1968 election but lost to Louis-Roland Comeau of the Progressive Conservative party. During his terms in Parliament, Stewart was Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Works from 1966 to 1968. John Smith Stewart, (18 May 1878 – 14 August 1970) was a Canadian politician and brigadier-general from Alberta. Early life John Smith Stewart was born 16 May 1878 in the Brampton, Ontario, to John Stewart and Mary Armstrong. Stewart moved to Edmonton at the age of 19 in 1896. Stewart later studied dentistry at University of Toronto, completing his studies in 1903. He moved to Lethbridge and married Jean McClure on 25 September 1907; she died in 1914. Stewart was appointed to the board of the newly established University of Alberta in 1909.
