John Palgrave Simpson
John Palgrave Simpson (1807–1887), commonly referred to as "Palgrave Simpson", was a Victorian playwright. He wrote more than fifty pieces in a variety of genres, including dramas, comedies, operas, and spectacles, between 1850 and 1885. Simpson also published novels, travel books and journalistic commentaries. He served as secretary of the Dramatic Authors' Society from 1868 to 1883. He is buried in St Thomas's Roman Catholic cemetery in Fulham. Biography John Palgrave Simpson was born on 13 June 1807 in Norwich, the second of the six children of William and Katherine Simpson. His father was town clerk of Norwich and treasurer of the county of Norfolk. Simpson was educated by private tutors and at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where he took his B.A. in 1829 and M.A. in 1832. John Simpson (footballer, Born 1933)
John Lionel Simpson (5 October 1933 – 7 December 1993) was an English football goalkeeper. He spent fifteen years playing for Gillingham, for whom he holds the all-time record for the most matches played in the Football League. Career Simpson began his professional career with Lincoln City, having been spotted playing for Netherfield in the Lancashire Combination but only managed five first-team appearances for the Sincil Bank club before Gillingham snapped him up in the summer of 1957 for just £750. For the next fifteen years he was the Gills' first-choice goalkeeper, helping them win the Fourth Division championship in the 1963–64 season, during which he let in just 30 goals, a club record which stood until 1995–96. He won the Kent side's Player of the Year award in consecutive seasons (1969–70, 1970–71). John Simpson (footballer, Born 1918)
John Simpson (27 October 1918 – 21 June 2000) was an English-born footballer who played as a left back in The Football League in the 1940s and 1950s. After playing as an amateur for Hull City reserves, he started his league career with Huddersfield Town and then moved to York City, first playing for them in 1947–48. He went on to play over 200 games for the Minstermen. He retired through injury in 1954. During the war, John was in the Army Physical Training Corps and guested for Plymouth Argyle, Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic, Portsmouth, Southampton, Leyton Orient, Aldershot and Leeds United. After a spell out of the game, he spent 9 years coaching at Hull City before moving to Hartlepool United as coach. In April 1970 he was appointed manager of Football League Fourth Division side Hartlepool, and he remained as manager until March 1971. Jock Simpson
John Robert Simpson (25 December 1886 – 4 January 1959) was a footballer who played as an outside right in the 1900s and 1910s. Career Club Simpson's footballing career began with Laurieston Villa, and after a trial with Rangers, he signed for Falkirk in 1905. The club finished runners-up in the Scottish Football League twice during his six-year spell ( 1907–08 and 1909–10), and he scored over 100 league goals, sometimes playing at centre forward, including 32 from 33 appearances in 1907–08, the highest total in the country. In January 1911, Simpson moved to Blackburn Rovers for a fee of £1800, a record fee received by a Scottish club. John Simpson (born 23 March 1958) is a British nuclear physicist. He is known for his work in gamma-ray spectroscopy and detector design. He was Head of Technology, Division of Technology Department. and was Head of the Nuclear Physics Group at STFC Daresbury Laboratory. He is a visiting professor of physics at the University of Liverpool. Biography Simpson was educated at University of Liverpool (BSc(Hons) Physics Class 1, 1979) and the University of Liverpool (PhD, 1983). In 2016, he was awarded the Ernest Rutherford Medal and Prize by the Institute of Physics. The award recognizes distinguished research in nuclear physics or nuclear technology.
