John Silvester (writer)
John Silvester is an Australian journalist and crime writer. He has written for major Melbourne based newspapers such as ''The Age'', the ''Sunday Herald Sun'' and others. Silvester has also co-written a number of bestselling books with Andrew Rule, based on crime in Melbourne. Some of their works formed the basis of the hit Australian TV series Underbelly (TV series), ''Underbelly''. He also appears weekly on 3AW's breakfast program as "Sly of the Underworld". Career Silvester received a Bachelor of Arts in politics and legal studies at La Trobe University in 1978, according to an article in the university's Alumni newsletter, ''Agora'', which also stated that his father, Fred Silvester, was a former Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner, and head of the Australian Bureau of Criminal Intelligence. John Silvester (blacksmith)
John Silvester (1652 – 5 May 1722) held the Lordship of Birthwaite and Kexborough, near Barnsley, then in the West Riding of Yorkshire, which he bought from Sir Francis Burdett in the late 16th or early 17th century. He was responsible for the construction of a school in the village of Kexborough. He was a blacksmith at the Tower of London and is said to have constructed a chain that was to be drawn across the width of the river Thames in case of invasion, particularly that of an anticipated Dutch Fleet invasion. John Silvester (lawyer)
Sir John Silvester, 1st Baronet (7 September 1745 – 30 March 1822), FRS, FSA, DCL, was an English lawyer and Common Serjeant of London from 1790 to 1803, and Recorder of London from 1803 until his death in 1822. Born in Yardley House in Chingford, Silvester was the son of Sir John Baptist Silvester M.D., FRS (died 1789), of Dutch descent and physician to the army in the Low Countries, under the Duke of Cumberland during the War of the Austrian Succession. In 1753 aged 8 John Silvester attended Merchant Taylors' School when James Townley was the Headmaster. He took part in the theatrical activities encouraged by Townley and was Head Monitor in 1761. He attended St John's College, Oxford, from 1764 and took his BCL in 1771. On qualifying in the Law he became a barrister at the Old Bailey.
