John Siegal
John Walter Siegal (May 15, 1918 – May 27, 2015) was an American football end/defensive end in the National Football League. He was drafted in the 17th round of the 1939 NFL Draft. He played five seasons for the Chicago Bears (1939–1943). He was born in Larksville, Pennsylvania Larksville is a borough in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is west of Wilkes Barre on the Susquehanna River (along U.S. Route 11). The population was 4,216 as of the 2020 census. History Larksville was formed from a section of .... Rules state that a legal offensive formation must always consist of seven players on the line of scrimmage and that the player on the end of the line constitutes an eligible receiver. Defensive end (DE) is a defensive position in the sport of gridiron football. This position has designated the players at each end of the defensive line, but changes in formation (American football), formations over the years have substantially changed how the position is played. History Early formations, with six- and seven-man line defense, seven-man lines, used the end as a containment player, whose job was first to prevent an "end run" around his position, then secondarily to force plays inside.
