John Sheehan (journalist)
John Sheehan (1812–1882) was an Irish journalist, writer and barrister. Early life Sheehan was the son of an hotel-keeper at Celbridge, County Kildare, where he was born. He was sent to the Jesuit college at Clongoweswood, where Francis Sylvester Mahony was his tutor for a time. About 1829 he entered Trinity College Dublin, but did not graduate. The Comet Club In 1830 Sheehan joined the Comet Club of young Irishmen, with Samuel Lover, Joseph Stirling Coyne, Robert Knox who became editor of ''The Morning Post'', and Maurice O'Connell. The club issued pamphlets attacking the tithe system; the first, ''The Parson's Horn Book'', which appeared in two parts with etchings by Lover, was popular. The club then issued ''The Comet'', a satirical weekly paper opposing the Church of Ireland, with the first number appearing on 1 May 1831. Sheehan was appointed sub-editor. John Sheehan (New Zealand Politician)
John Sheehan (5 July 1844 – 12 June 1885) was a 19th-century New Zealand politician. He was the first New Zealand-born Member of Parliament elected by a general electorate (rather than a Māori electorate) and he was the first New Zealand-born person to hold cabinet rank. Biography Early life and career Sheehan was born in Auckland in 1844. He was educated at St Peter's School under the guidance of his teacher, Richard O'Sullivan and where he knew another later Cabinet Minister, Joseph Tole. Political career He was the Minister of Justice and the Minister of Māori Affairs from 1877 to 1879. He represented several North Island electorates: Rodney from to 1879, then Thames from to 1884, when he was defeated (for Napier by John Davies Ormond). John James Sheehan (9 May 1916 – 4 June 1984) was an Australian politician. He was born in Ballarat to clerk James Sheehan and Cecilia Leach. He attended St Patrick's College, Melbourne Teachers' College and the University of Melbourne, receiving a Bachelor of Arts and a Diploma of Education. He became a schoolteacher at Rushworth but soon enlisted in the AIF, serving during World War II in New Guinea and Bougainville. On his return he became a senior master at Ballarat High School. USS ''Sheehan'' (DE-541) was a United States Navy ''John C. Butler''-class destroyer escort launched during World War II but never completed. Namesake John Francis Sheehan was born on 20 January 1910 at Fall River, Massachusetts. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on 25 October 1928 at the Navy Recruiting Station at Boston, Massachusetts as a seaman apprentice and transferred the same day to the Naval Training Center at Newport, Rhode Island. Sheehan was rated seaman 2nd class on 27 February 1929, quartermaster 3rd class on 28 July 1930, quartermaster 2nd class on 16 November 1936, quartermaster 1st class on 16 February 1938, and chief quartermaster (acting appointment) on 1 March 1942. John Thomas Sheehan (April 15, 1893 – May 29, 1987) was a professional baseball player who played infield for the Brooklyn Robins in the 1920 and 1921 baseball seasons. He attended college at Fordham University. After his playing career, Sheehan worked as the director of the Chicago Cubs farm system. He later managed in the minor leagues during 1916–1953. John Joseph Sheehan (29 May 1890 – 17 June 1933) was an Australian rules footballer who played with the Collingwood Football Club and Richmond Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He was also listed with the Melbourne Football Club, but never played a game. Military service He enlisted in the First AIF on 12 July 1915. He did not serve overseas. John Sheehan (October 22, 1885 – February 14, 1952) was an American actor and vaudeville performer. After acting onstage and in vaudeville for several years, Sheehan began making films in 1914, starring in a number of short films. From 1914 to 1916, he appeared in over 60 films, the vast majority of them film shorts. Career He returned exclusively to the stage in 1917, where he remained until the advent of sound films.
