John Bunyan Shearer
John Bunyan Shearer (1832–1919) was the eighth president of Davidson College. Biography John Bunyan Shearer was born in Appomattox County, Virginia on July 19, 1832. He completed his undergraduate studies at Hampden–Sydney College in 1851 and eventually entered the ministry. After the American Civil War, Shearer became president of Stewart College in Clarksville, Tennessee, which would later become Rhodes College. Shearer became president of Davidson in 1888; he focused particularly on public relations and fundraising. Shearer was an engineering and farm machinery manufacturer based in Mannum between 1882 and 1912, founded by John (1845–1932) and David Shearer (1850–1936), and continued separately as John Shearer & Sons of Kilkenny, South Australia, and David Shearer & Co. (later David Shearer Ltd.) of Mannum. History John and David Shearer were two of a family of six children born to Peter Shearer (c. 1808 – 31 July 1891) and his wife Mary (c. 1814 – 28 May 1908) in Orkney. John McMillan Shearer (8 July 1917 – 3 April 1979) was a Scottish professional football player and coach. Career After serving with the British Army during World War Two, Shearer signed a professional contract with Derby County in 1946. He left later that same year to sign for Bradford City, where he spent three seasons before moving to Grimsby Town. John "Jack" Shearer (30 December 1926 – 12 January 2001) was a Church of Ireland clergyman and the Dean of Belfast cathedral. Life He was born in Belfast and educated at Belfast Technical High School before studying at Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated in 1950. He was ordained in 1950. After two years in Magheralin Parish, County Down he served for seven years in St Patrick's Parish, Ballymacarrett, before becoming rector of Magheradoll, Ballynahinch. He then became Rector of Seagoe from 1964 to 1985, becoming Archdeacon of Dromore in 1970. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., and Muhammad Ali before his fight with Joe Frazier. Biography John Shearer was born on April 21, 1947, in Harlem to Phyllis Shearer, an attorney who would later become the Deputy Commissioner of Social Services in Westchester County, New York, and Ted Shearer, art director of BBDO and a cartoonist who would later create ''Quincy''.
