John Shankly
John Dunlop Shankly (4 November 1903 – 18 May 1960) was a Scottish professional association football, footballer who played as a Forward (association football), forward in the Scottish Football League, Scottish League and the Football League. Personal life Shankly's brothers Alec Shankly, Alec, Bill Shankly, Bill, Jimmy Shankly, Jimmy and Bob Shankly, Bob all became footballers. After retiring from football, he returned to work as a miner. Shankly died at Glasgow Victoria Infirmary on 18 May 1960, after suffering a heart attack during the 1960 European Cup Final earlier that evening. Glenbuck
Glenbuck ( gd, Gleann Buic) is a small, remote village in East Ayrshire. It is nestled in the hills east of Muirkirk, East Ayrshire, Scotland. Glenbuck Loch The site of the village was slightly to the north-west of Glenbuck "Loch", on the River Ayr, and was surrounded on three sides by South Lanarkshire. The Ayrshire/Lanarkshire border runs north to south across the Loch. The "Loch" is in fact a dam created in 1802 by James Finlay for his Catrine cotton works. Much of the dam banks was created by French prisoners of war. The dam was situated so that the water to power the mill took exactly 12 hours to reach Catrine. The Tenant of West Glenbuck Farm had his rent paid by James Findlay to open the sluice at 18.00 and close it at 06.00, mirroring exactly the working hours of the Mill. Alexander Shankly was a Scottish professional association football, footballer who played in the Scottish Football League, Scottish League for Ayr United F.C., Ayr United and Nithsdale Wanderers F.C., Nithsdale Wanderers as an inside left. Personal life Shankly's brothers Bill Shankly, Bill, Jimmy Shankly, Jimmy, John Shankly, John and Bob Shankly, Bob all became footballers. He served in the Royal Scots Fusiliers and in the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War. Shankly was troubled by sciatica after the war and returned to work as a miner before being forced into early retirement. Football League Third Division South
The Third Division South of The Football League was a tier in the English football league system from 1921 to 1958. It ran in parallel with the Third Division North with clubs elected to the League or relegated from Division Two allocated to one or the other according to geographical position. Some clubs in the English Midlands shuttled between the Third Division South and the Third Division North according to the composition of the two leagues in any one season. This division was created in 1921 from the Third Division, formed one year earlier when the Football League absorbed the leading clubs from the Southern League. In 1921, a Northern section was also created called the Third Division North. 1960 European Cup Final
The 1960 European Cup Final was the fifth final in the history of the European Cup, and was contested by Real Madrid of Spain and Eintracht Frankfurt of West Germany. Real won 7–3 in front of a crowd of over 127,000 people at Glasgow's Hampden Park stadium, still the highest attendance for a European Cup final. There were an estimated 70 million television viewers around Europe. Widely regarded as one of the greatest football matches ever played, it also remains the highest-scoring final in the history of the competition. Frankfurt reached the final through an impressive 12–4 aggregate victory over Scottish champions Rangers, whereas Madrid overcame their bitter rivals Barcelona 6–2 over two legs. Heart Attack
A myocardial infarction (MI), commonly known as a heart attack, occurs when blood flow decreases or stops to the coronary artery of the heart, causing damage to the heart muscle. The most common symptom is chest pain or discomfort which may travel into the shoulder, arm, back, neck or jaw. Often it occurs in the center or left side of the chest and lasts for more than a few minutes. The discomfort may occasionally feel like heartburn. Other symptoms may include shortness of breath, nausea, feeling faint, a cold sweat or feeling tired. About 30% of people have atypical symptoms. Women more often present without chest pain and instead have neck pain, arm pain or feel tired. Among those over 75 years old, about 5% have had an MI with little or no history of symptoms. Glasgow Victoria Infirmary
The Glasgow Victoria Infirmary was a teaching hospital situated at Langside/ Battlefield in the south-east of Glasgow from 1880 until 2015. It was managed by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. History A competition was held to design a 120-bedded hospital and this attracted 46 entries from architects around the UK. Campbell Douglas & Sellars won the competition to design the new voluntary hospital for the city's South Side in 1882. Building work began in 1888 and the infirmary was officially opened on 14 February 1890. The original buildings consisted of a central administration block, a lodge and one pavilion.
