John Sands (printer)
John Sands (12 November 1818 – 16 August 1873) was an English-born Australian engraver, printer and stationer. He founded the John Sands company and published the Sands Directory. Sands was born in Sandhurst, Berkshire, and emigrated to Sydney in 1837. G. P. Walsh notes that "especially notable were his directories, almanacs, gazetteers and prints by F. C. Terry and S. T. John Sands is an Australian printing company and former distributor of games and computer hardware that is now a wholly owned subsidiary of American Greetings. In 1851, John Sands and Thomas Kenny founded Sands and Kenny in Sydney. The firm later became Sands, Kenny & Co., and then John Sands Ltd. American Greetings acquired John Sands from Amcor in December 1995 as part of a global expansion. Distributor John Sands acted as a distributor for Milton Bradley from the 1960s to the 1990s, releasing board games in Australia including ''Foxy'', ''The Game of Life'', ''Wonderland'', ''Mix & Match'', ''Stay Alive'', ''Upwords'' and ''I Wish I Were''. John Sands (journalist)
John Sands (1826–1900) of Ormiston was a Scottish freelance journalist and artist who also had an interest in archaeology and folk customs, especially the way of life on Scottish islands. He spent almost a year on St Kilda and lived on several other remote islands. St Kilda St Kilda is an isolated outlying archipelago in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, and Sands played an important role in bringing the plight of the islanders to the world's attention. On his second visit Sands became stranded there in the winter of 1876–7, and during that time invented the "mailboat" by attaching a message to a lifebuoy salvaged from the wreck of the ''Peti Dubrovacki'' and throwing it into the sea. His book ''Out of the World'' was published in 1878 after his two visits to the archipelago in 1875 and 1876–7. In 1877 he excavated the ''Taigh an t-Sithiche'', an Iron Age souterrain. John Sands (footballer)
John Sands (4 March 1859 – 29 February 1924) was an English footballer who played as a goalkeeper for Nottingham Forest before the advent of League football, and made one appearance for the England national team. Career Sands was born in Nottingham and played junior football in the town before joining Nottingham Forest in 1878, shortly before his club debut. At that time Forest were not playing in a recognised league so matches were either "friendlies" or FA Cup matches. Sands helped them reach the FA Cup semi-finals in 1879 (lost 2–1 to Old Etonians) and 1880 (lost 1–0 to Oxford University). Shortly before the 1880 semi-final (played on 27 March 1880), Sands was selected for his only appearance for England away to Wales on 15 March.
