Merchant's Hope
Merchant's Hope was the name of a plantation and church established in the Virginia Colony in the 17th century. It was also the name of an English sailing ship, ''Merchant's Hope'', which plied the Atlantic bringing emigrants to Virginia in the early 17th-century. The ''Merchant's Hope'' was owned by a man named William Barker who was a wealthy English merchant and mariner who patented land in Virginia. Merchant's Hope Plantation Merchant's Hope Plantation was located west of Flowerdew Hundred on the south shore of the James River near the mouth of Powell's Creek in a portion of Charles City County which was divided to form Prince George County in 1703. It was located on the former site of Powellbrooke Plantation, whose owner Captain Nathaniel Powell (one of the original 1607 colonists), his wife, and ten others were killed during the Indian Massacre of 1622. John Sadler (of Warmwell, Dorset) (18 August 1615 – April 1674) was an English lawyer, academic, Member of Parliament, Town Clerk of London, Hebraist, Neoplatonist and millenarian thinker, private secretary to Oliver Cromwell, and member of the Parliamentarian Council of State. He was Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge from 1650 to 1660.''Concise Dictionary of National Biography''. Sadler was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. John Sadler (industrialist)
John Sadler (1 February 1820 – 22 December 1910) was an English industrialist and public figure associated with the town of Oldbury, Worcestershire (now Oldbury, West Midlands), United Kingdom. As a result of his lifetime of service, Sadler became known as 'the Grand Old Man of Oldbury'. Background John was the youngest son of Benjamin Sadler (1777–1850) and Nancy Johnson (1776–1852) of Round's Green, Oldbury. Members of the Sadler family contributed greatly to their native district during the nineteenth century and rose to pre-eminence in the area. Further afield, John's nephew, Sir Samuel Alexander Sadler (1842–1911), achieved renown in the town of Middlesbrough in the North East of England. John Sadler is a British historian specialising in the Anglo-Scottish Border conflicts during the Middle Ages In the history of Europe, the Middle Ages or medieval period lasted approximately from the late 5th to the late 15th centuries, similar to the post-classical period of global history.
