John Russell Bartlett
John Russell Bartlett (October 23, 1805 – May 28, 1886) was an American historian and linguist. Biography Bartlett was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on October 23, 1805. In 1819 he was a student at the Lowville Academy in Lowville, New York, which he attended for two years. From 1807 to 1824 he lived in Kingston, Canada. From 1824 to 1836 he lived in Providence where he worked first as a clerk in his uncle's dry goods store (1824–1828), then as a bookkeeper and acting teller at the Bank of North America (1828–1831), and finally as the first cashier of the Globe Bank (1831–1836). In 1831, he was one of the founders of the Providence Athenaeum, and was elected its first treasurer. That year he was also elected to membership in the Rhode Island Historical Society. The following year he was ordering books for the newly founded Providence Franklin Society, an early lyceum. Providence, Rhode Island
Providence is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Rhode Island. One of the oldest cities in New England, it was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, a Reformed Baptist theologian and religious exile from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Henry Cheever Pratt (1803–1880) was an American artist and explorer. He lived in Boston, Massachusetts. Biography Born in Orford, New Hampshire, and trained by Samuel F.B. Morse, Pratt painted landscapes of Maine on painting trips with Thomas Cole and of the American Southwest while on boundary surveying expeditions. John Russell Bartlett's ''A Personal Narrative of Explorations and Incidents in Texas, New Mexico, California, Sonora and Chihuahua'' (2 vols., 1854) contains 30 of Pratt's illustrations. Pratt's paintings include ''View of Smith's West Texas Ranch'' (1852) now owned by the Texas Memorial Museum at the University of Texas. ''Bartlett's Familiar Quotations'', often simply called ''Bartlett's'', is an American reference work that is the longest-lived and most widely distributed collection of quotations. The book was first issued in 1855 and is currently in its nineteenth edition, published in 2022. The book arranges its entries by author, rather than by subject, as many other quotation collections, and enters the authors chronologically by date of birth rather than alphabetically. Within years, authors are arranged alphabetically and quotations are arranged chronologically within each author's entry, followed by "attributed" remarks whose source in the author's writings has not been confirmed. The book contains a thorough keyword index and details the source of each quotation. John Russell Bartlett (naval Officer)
John Russell Bartlett (1843–1904) was an American naval officer and oceanographer. Early life Bartlett was born on September 26, 1843 in New York. He was the son of John Russell Bartlett, an ethnologist and Secretary of State of Rhode Island. His mother was Eliza Allen Rhodes. He grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Navy career Bartlett entered the United States Naval Academy in November 1859 and attended the Academy until being transferred to the steam sloop USS ''Brooklyn'' in the early months of the American Civil War. While on board the ''Brooklyn'', he was present during the capture of Forts Jackson and St. Philip in April 1862, the capture of New Orleans a few days later, as well as the Siege of Vicksburg. Franklin Pierce
Franklin Pierce (November 23, 1804October 8, 1869) was the 14th president of the United States, serving from 1853 to 1857.
