John Septimus Roe
John Septimus Roe (8 May 1797 – 28 May 1878) was the first Surveyor-General of Western Australia. He was a renowned explorer, a member of Western Australia's legislative and executive councils for nearly 40 years, but also a participant in the Pinjarra massacre on 28 October 1834. Early life John Septimus Roe was born at Newbury, Berkshire on 8 May 1797. He was the seventh son of James Roe, the rector of Newbury. At 10 years of age, Roe was sent to Christ's Hospital School (which is still standing today) in London, to study for a career as a school teacher. There, he showed a great aptitude for mathematics, and was selected for training by the Mathematical School, which trained selected students for service in the Royal Navy. He was an outstanding student, and was apprenticed to the Navy at the age of 15. Naval service John Septimus Roe entered the Naval service on 11 June 1813. John Roe (footballer)
John Roe (7 January 193820 February 1996) was a Scottish footballer whose career as a full-back extended from 1959 (Berwick Rangers) to 1964 (St Johnstone). A native of Broxburn, John Roe began his career as a trialist for Berwick Rangers, playing once in the 1957–58 season before moving south to Colchester United. The full-back played just twice for them before returning to Scotland, joining Dundee United in 1960. Despite staying at Tannadice for three seasons, Roe played in only eight league matches and made the short journey to Perth to join St Johnstone. John Roe (rugby Union)
John Roe (born 10 April 1977 in Brisbane) is an Australian physician and a former international rugby union player. He played in the back row for the national team and captained the Queensland Reds in Super Rugby. Roe was educated at Brisbane Boys' College. He graduated in medicine on 15 December 2006 from the University of Queensland. Career Roe played for Queensland for the first time in a match against the visiting United States team on their 1999 tour to Australia. In 2001 he made his Super Rugby debut for the Queensland Reds, in a match against the Highlanders, a New Zealand side from Dunedin. He went on to make appearances for both Australia A and the Australian sevens team. In 2003, Roe made his test debut for the Wallabies against Namibia at the 2003 Rugby World Cup held in Australia. John Roe (mathematician)
John Roe (6 October 1959 – 9 March 2018) was a British mathematician. Roe grew up in the countryside in Shropshire. He went to Rugby School, was an undergraduate at Cambridge University, and received his D.Phil. in 1985 from the University of Oxford under the supervision of Michael Atiyah. As a post-doctoral student, he was at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) in Berkeley, and then a tutor at Jesus College, Oxford. From 1998 until shortly before his death he was a professor at the Pennsylvania State University. His research interests center around Atiyah–Singer index theorem, index theorems, coarse geometry, operator algebras, noncommutative geometry, and the Novikov conjecture in differential topology. He was an editor of the ''Journal of Noncommutative Geometry'' and the ''Journal of Topology''. In 1996 he was awarded the Whitehead Prize. In 2012 he became a fellow of the American Mathematical Society.
