John Reading (clergyman)
John Reading (1588–1667) was an English priest of Calvinist views and Biblical commentator. Life He was born of poor parents in Buckinghamshire. He matriculated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford, on 4 May 1604, and graduated Bachelor of Arts (BA) on 17 October 1607. When he proceeded Master of Arts (Oxbridge and Dublin), Oxford Master of Arts (MA Oxon) on 22 June 1610, he was described as of St Mary Hall. Taking holy orders, he became about 1614 chaplain to Edward la Zouche, 11th Baron Zouche of Haringeworth, Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports and governor of Dover Castle. After preaching at Dover many sermons before his patron, Reading was on 2 December 1616, at the request of the parishioners, appointed minister of St Mary's Church, Dover. John Reading (composer And Organist)
John Reading (c. 1645–1692) was an English composer and organist, and father of John Reading (c. 1685 – 1764) who is remembered as an important music copyist. Little of Reading's life is known. He was born in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, and became Master of the Choristers at Lincoln Cathedral in 1670, and in 1675 at Chichester Cathedral and at Winchester Cathedral. From 1681 until his death he was organist at Winchester College. Here he set the college's Latin graces to music as well as the school song '' Dulce domum''. Several of his organ works were included in a collection which was completed by Daniel Roseingrave. He also composed songs, theatre music, and part of a set of responses (now in the Anglican church repertoire in a form completed by modern editors). He died in Winchester. John Reading (composer, Organist And Copyist)
John Reading (c. 1685/86 – 2 September 1764) was an English composer, organist and copyist (his name, like the town, is pronounced "Redding"a spelling variant of his name which occurs in several documents). His greatest importance lies in his work as a transcriber, arranger, and copyist of a wide variety of music. Life Little is known of John Reading's early life. He was probably the son of the composer and organist John Reading (c. 1645–1692) who from 1681 until his death was organist and Master of the Choristers at Winchester College. The younger Reading received the best possible musical training, being a chorister of the Chapel Royal, where he was taught by John Blow. He would almost certainly have sung at the funerals of Henry Purcell and Queen Mary. It was tradition, when the choristers' voices broke, for the Chapel Royal to find them their first appointment. Colonel John Reading
Col. John Reading was the first white landowner in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. His son, John Reading (New Jersey governor), Governor John Reading was the first native-born Governor of New Jersey, serving in 1747, and again in from September 1757 to June 1758. Born in England, Colonel Reading emigrated to Gloucester, in what was then the Province of New Jersey in approximately 1684. He was a member of the assembly and was Clerk of Gloucester County, New Jersey, Gloucester county from 1688–1702. Along with two others, he was commissioned by the Provincial Council of West Jersey to purchase land from the Indigenous peoples of the Americas, Native Americans which encompassed between the Raritan River, Raritan and Delaware River, Delaware rivers. John Roberts Reading (November 1, 1826 – February 14, 1886) was a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Biography Born in Somerton, Philadelphia on November 1, 1826, Reading completed preparatory studies, graduated from the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1847 and began practice in Somerton.
