John R. Powers
John R. Powers (November 30, 1945 – January 17, 2013) was an American novelist and playwright. Early life Powers grew up in the Mt. Greenwood neighborhood on the far southwest side of Chicago. He held a Ph.D. in Communications from Northwestern University and was a professor of speech and performing arts at Northeastern Illinois University. He received his undergraduate degree in sociology from Loyola University and was a graduate of Brother Rice High School in Chicago. Work Powers wrote four books of fiction, ''The Last Catholic in America'' (Dutton 1973), ''Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?'' (Regnery 1975), ''The Unoriginal Sinner and the Ice Cream God'' (Contemporary 1977), and ''The Junk Drawer, Corner Store, Front Porch Blues'' (Dutton 1992). He also wrote the self-help book ''Odditude'' (HCI 2007). These books relate his experience of growing up in 1950's Chicago. Lake Geneva is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Located in Walworth County and situated on Geneva Lake, it is home to an estimated 8,105 people as of 2019, up from 7,651 at the 2010 census. It is located about 40 miles southwest of Milwaukee and 65 miles northwest of Chicago. Given its relative proximity to both the Chicago metropolitan and Milwaukee metropolitan areas, it has become a popular resort city that thrives on tourism. The points of the compass are a set of horizontal, radially arrayed compass directions (or azimuths) used in navigation and cartography. A compass rose is primarily composed of four cardinal directions—north, east, south, and west—each separated by 90 degrees, and secondarily divided by four ordinal (intercardinal) directions—northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest—each located halfway between two cardinal directions. Some disciplines such as meteorology and navigation further divide the compass with additional azimuths. Within European tradition, a fully defined compass has 32 'points' (and any finer subdivisions are described in fractions of points).
