John Q. Public
John Q. Public (and several similar names; see the Variations section below) is a generic name and placeholder name, especially in American English, to denote a hypothetical member of society, deemed a " common man", who is presumed to represent the randomly selected "man on the street". The equivalent term in British English is Joe Public. Variations There are various similar terms for the average Joe, including John Q. Citizen and John Q. Taxpayer, or Jane Q. Public, Jane Q. Citizen, and Jane Q. Taxpayer for a woman. The name John Doe is used in a similar manner. The term Tom, Dick, and Harry is often used to denote multiple hypothetical persons. An equivalent term is Joe Public which is used in the United Kingdom. Tommy Atkins
Tommy Atkins (often just Tommy) is slang for a common soldier in the British Army. It was certainly well established during the nineteenth century, but is particularly associated with the First World War. It can be used as a term of reference, or as a form of address. German soldiers would call out to "Tommy" across no man's land if they wished to speak to a British soldier. French and Commonwealth troops would also call British soldiers "Tommies". In more recent times, the term Tommy Atkins has been used less frequently, although the name "Tom" is occasionally still heard; private soldiers in the British Army's Parachute Regiment are still referred to as "Toms". The man on the Clapham omnibus is a hypothetical ordinary and reasonable person, used by the courts in English law where it is necessary to decide whether a party has acted as a reasonable person would – for example, in a tort, civil action for negligence. "Joe Bloggs" and "Fred Bloggs" are placeholder names used primarily in the United Kingdom to represent the average man on the street. It is used by students, on standardized test preparation courses, to represent the average test-taker. Many countries, such as the United States, Germany or South Africa, use their own unique placeholder names, some even used tongue in cheek. Sometimes the name will be useful as a quick alternative, or stalling mechanism especially when used in conjunction with "What's'isname?" and "'Im down the street", when a forgotten name sits on the tip of the tongue. James Jacob Lange (August 15, 1926 – April 16, 2009) was an American cartoonist who worked for ''The Oklahoman'' for 58 years and produced over 19,000 cartoons. Biography Lange was born in Winnebago, Minnesota. While he was a youth, the family moved to Dubuque, Iowa. He joined the U.S. Air Force during World War II. In Iowa he met Helen Johnstone, whom he later married. After his military service, Lange attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. He and Helen moved to Oklahoma, where he got a job as an editorial cartoonist, hired by newspaper mogul Edward Gaylord. Vaughn Richard Shoemaker (August 11, 1902 Chicago, Illinois – August 18, 1991 Carol Stream, Illinois) was an American editorial cartoonist. He won the 1938 and 1947 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning and created the character John Q. Public. Shoemaker started his career at the ''Chicago Daily News'' and spent 22 years there. His 1938 Pulitzer cartoon for the paper was ''The Road Back'', featuring a World War I soldier marching back to war. The 1947 winning cartoon for the paper was ''Still Racing His Shadow'', featuring "new wage demands" of workers trying to outrun his shadow "cost of living". He went on to work for the ''New York Herald Tribune'', the ''Chicago American'', and ''Chicago Today''. By his 1972 retirement he had drawn over 14,000 cartoons. Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher (; born December 3, 1973), commonly known as "Joe the Plumber", is an American conservative activist and commentator. He gained national attention during the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign season when, during a videotaped campaign stop in Ohio by then- Democratic nominee Barack Obama, Wurzelbacher raised concerns that Obama's tax policy would increase taxes on small business owners. Wurzelbacher is a member of the Republican Party. Since he expressed to then-Senator Obama that he was interested in purchasing a small plumbing business, Wurzelbacher was given the moniker "Joe the Plumber" by the McCain–Palin campaign.
