John Pickering (dramatist)
''Horestes'' is a late Tudor morality play by the English dramatist John Pickering. It was first published in 1567 and was most likely performed by Lord Rich's men as part of the Christmas revels at court that year. The play's full title is ''A new interlude of Vice containing the history of Horestes with the cruel revengement of his father's death upon his one natural mother.'' It has been proposed that John Pickering (John Pickeryng) is likely to be the same person as lawyer and politician Sir John Puckering. Source and text The play dramatises the story of the ancient Greek myth of Orestes. Rather than Aeschylus' trilogy of Athenian tragedies ''Oresteia'' (458 BCE), however, Pickering's source for his version of the story is William Caxton's translation of the French romance ''Recuyell of the Historyes of Troye'' (translated in 1475). Northamptonshire (UK Parliament Constituency)
The county constituency of Northamptonshire, in the East Midlands of England was a constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of England, then of the Parliament of Great Britain from 1707 to 1800 and of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1832 and was represented in Parliament by two MPs, traditionally known as Knights of the Shire. After 1832 the county was split into two new constituencies, North Northamptonshire and South Northamptonshire. Boundaries The constituency consisted of the historic county of Northamptonshire. Although the county contained a number of parliamentary boroughs, each of which elected one or two MPs in its own right for parts of the period when Northamptonshire was a constituency, these areas were not excluded from the county constituency. John Pickering (soldier)
Colonel John Pickering (baptised 3 December 1615, died 24 November 1645) was a member of the landed gentry from Northamptonshire who served with the Parliamentarian army in the First English Civil War. Like his elder brother Sir Gilbert Pickering, a close ally of Oliver Cromwell, he was a religious Independent, known for his devout faith and radical views. Appointed colonel of an infantry regiment in the New Model Army, he died of fever at Ottery St Mary on 24 November 1645. Personal details John Pickering, baptised 3 December 1615, was born in Titchmarsh, Northamptonshire, second son of Sir John Pickering (1585–1628), and Susannah Dryden (d.1661). The Pickering family were known to be devout Puritans, and Sir John was arrested in January 1627 for refusing to pay "loans" imposed by Charles I. John Pickering (September 22, 1737 – April 11, 1805) was President of New Hampshire, Chief Justice of the New Hampshire Superior Court of Judicature and a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of New Hampshire. He was the second federal official impeached by the United States House of Representatives and the first person convicted and removed from office in an impeachment trial by the United States Senate. John Pickering (February 7, 1777 - May 5, 1846) was an American linguist. He was president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, from 1839 to 1846. He was elected to the American Philosophical Society. He graduated from Harvard University. He worked on the orthography of native languages. He is buried at Broad Street Cemetery. John Pickering (ca.1815 – 15 October 1891) was a politician in the early days of the colony of South Australia. History Pickering was born in Ashborne, Warwickshire, England and trained as a carpenter in Royal Leamington Spa, Leamington after working for some time at a coalyard. He left England for Australia on the ''Asia'', arriving in July 1839. He found ready employment and by 1849 and owned two lots on the Port Road, Hindmarsh, South Australia, Hindmarsh and a timber merchant's business. In 1851 he joined the gold rush to Victoria, and within a few years returned to Hindmarsh sufficiently wealthy to give up active business life. Politics He served on the Hindmarsh District Council from 1857 to 1866 and had a year each as Chairman and Treasurer. He was, with H. The Picks
The Picks was an American vocal quartet that backed Buddy Holly and the Crickets' band on nine of the first twelve Crickets releases on Brunswick in 1957, as well as backing Buddy Holly solos for group sounds. The original members were John Pickering (lead), Bill Pickering (tenor), and Bob Lapham (baritone). Biography In 1940, as young members of the Pickering Family Quartet (Mom, Pop, Billy and Johnny), who were singing daily on KICA, Clovis, New Mexico, the two brothers first met Norman Petty and Violet Ann Brady (later, Vi Petty). At the time, Johnny was seven and Billy and Norman were thirteen. Norman Petty, whose piano show followed their radio show, soon became good friends with Billy and Johnny. The family soon moved back and forth between Clovis (KICA), Lubbock (KFYO and KSEL) and Houston (KTRH and KPRC), performing with and meeting many other professional musicians over the years.
