John Paulet, 14th Marquess Of Winchester
John Paulet, 14th Marquess of Winchester (3 June 1801 – 4 July 1887), styled Earl of Wiltshire until 1843, was a British peer and soldier. Life Born at Amport House in 1801 as the eldest son of the 13th Marquess of Winchester, he was educated at Eton. On 10 April 1817, he was commissioned a cornet in the 10th Light Dragoons, bought a lieutenancy on 16 November 1820, and a captaincy in the 35th Regiment of Foot on 12 June 1823. He exchanged into the 8th Hussars the same year. On 9 June 1826, he bought a majority in the regiment ( Lord Brudenell, later Lord Cardigan, got his captaincy), and purchased an unattached lieutenant-colonelcy of infantry on 30 December 1826. On 14 April 1837, he exchanged from unattached half-pay to replace Lord Bingham (later Lord Lucan) as lieutenant-colonel of the 17th Lancers, and then retired from the Army the next day. Henry Howard Molyneux Herbert, 4th Earl of Carnarvon, (24 June 1831 – 29 June 1890), known as Lord Porchester from 1833 to 1849, was a British politician and a leading member of the Conservative Party. He was twice Secretary of State for the Colonies and also served as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Henry William Montagu(e) Paulet, 16th Marquess of Winchester (30 October 1862 – 28 June 1962) was an English peer, landowner, soldier, sportsman, politician and business man. He was known as Lord Henry Paulet from 1887 until 1899. After a youth spent largely in travelling and hunting, he became Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire and Chairman of Hampshire County Council, then served in the Hampshire Regiment and the Rifle Brigade during the First World War. In the 1920s he was associated in business with Clarence Hatry, which led to his bankruptcy in 1930. When he died in Monte Carlo at the age of 99 he was the oldest-ever member of the House of Lords. Wemyss Castle (pronounced eems is situated in Wemyss on the sea cliffs between the villages of East Wemyss and West Wemyss in Fife, Scotland. Wemyss Castle is considered to be a multi-period building, and today's castle includes many elements from former periods such as the 15th century tower and the 19th century stables and gatepiers. History Accounts date the construction of the castle to 1421 when Sir John Wemyss decided to build a fortified castle to replace one destroyed by the Duke of Rothesay at Kilconquhar in 1402.
