John Paterson (New York Politician)
John Paterson (often spelled Patterson) (1744 – July 19, 1808) was a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution, and a U.S. Congressman from New York. Early life Paterson was born in 1744 in either Farmington or New Britain in the Connecticut Colony. His mother was Ruth (Bird) Paterson, and his father Colonel John Paterson (1708–1762), was a militia veteran of the French and Indian War, who died during the Siege of Havana. He graduated from Yale College in 1762, studied law, attained admission to the bar, and practiced in New Britain. He was a justice of the peace in New Britain until 1774, when he moved to Lenox, Massachusetts. Paterson was elected to the Lenox board of selectmen and as a town assessor. The town's proprietor's also chose him to serve as their clerk, which required him to maintain records of land transactions and ownership. John Paterson (born 14 December 1897 – 11 January 1973) was a Scottish footballer who played as a forward. Career Born in Dundee, Paterson played club football for Dundee, Leicester City, Sunderland, Preston North End, Queens Park Rangers, Mid Rhondda and Mansfield Town, and made one appearance for Scotland in 1920. For Sunderland he scored 40 goals in 77 appearances in all competitions. John Ligertwood Paterson (September 14, 1820 – December 9, 1882) was a Scottish physician who lived and worked in Bahia, Brazil. He co-founded the Tropicalista School of Medicine in Brazil, along with O. E. H. Wucherer and José Francisco da Silva Lima. Sir John Valentine Jardine Paterson (14 February 1920 – 12 March 2000) was a Scottish businessman whose career was mostly in India. He was Chairman of the family firm, Jardine Henderson of Calcutta (closely related to Jardines of Hong Kong), from 1963 to 1967, Chairman of the Indian Jute Mills Association in 1963 and President of the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 1966. John Johnstone Paterson (29 October 1886 - 29 January 1971) was a tai-pan of Jardine Matheson & Co. and a member of the Executive Council and Legislative Council of Hong Kong. Biography The eldest son of William Paterson, a former partner at Jardine Matheson & Co. in the 1870s and 1880s, J. J. Paterson followed in his father's footsteps, becoming managing director of the firm in the 1930s. He also served as chairman of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation on three occasions between 1932 and 1941. Paterson was first appointed to the Legislative Council in April 1930 as a stand-in for B. D. F. Beith. Subsequently, he was re-appointed to two four-year-terms in 1934 and 1938. John Ford Paterson (1851, Dundee – 30 June 1912, Carlton), often referred to as Ford or J. Ford Paterson, was a Scottish-born Australian artist. He specialised in landscapes. Biography While still a teenager, he began his studies at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh and exhibited his first works shortly after turning twenty. In 1872, he followed his family to Melbourne, where he remained for three years, but returned to Scotland when he found that the local art instruction did not meet his needs for further development. Once back, he came under the influence of the Glasgow School and held numerous exhibitions, in Liverpool and Manchester as well as throughout Scotland. As his reputation grew, he was able to join the prestigious Savage Club in London. John Paterson (architect)
John Paterson (died 1832) was a Scottish architect who trained with Robert Adam (1728–1792) whom he assisted with his work on Edinburgh University Old College and Seton House Castle. Life He was the second son of George Paterson (d. 1789) an Edinburgh architect and builder linked to Robert Mylne and living on St John Street in the Canongate in a building he had built with Francis Charteris, Earl of Wemyss and March and thereafter shared. Its site is remembered in the building Charteris Land, a modern building which replaced it. The family also owned a small estate at Monimail in Fife called Cunnochie. The estate passed to the oldest son (also George Paterson) on the death of the father. John lived on St John Street until 1784 and then moved to Elgin, Moray, Elgin to work with Sir James Grant. Jackie Paterson (5 September 1920 – 19 November 1966) was a Scottish boxer who was world flyweight boxing champion. He was also British champion at flyweight and bantamweight. Early life Born in Springside, Ayrshire, Paterson emigrated with his family from Scotland, when he was eight years old, to Scranton, Pennsylvania.
