John Ormsby-Gore, 1st Baron Harlech
John Ralph Ormsby-Gore, 1st Baron Harlech (3 June 1816 – 15 June 1876), was a British peer and Conservative Member of Parliament. Biography Lord Harlech was the eldest son of William Ormsby-Gore, an Anglo-Irish aristocrat, and Mary Jane Ormsby. He was elected to the House of Commons for Carnarvonshire in 1837, a seat he held until 1841, and later represented North Shropshire from 1859 to 1876. On 14 January 1876, he was raised to the peerage as Baron Harlech, of Harlech in the County of Merioneth, with remainder to his brother William in the absence of male heirs. Marriage and children Lord Harlech married Sarah, daughter of Sir John Tyrell, 2nd Baronet, on 4 June 1844. They had one child: * Hon. 1837 United Kingdom General Election
The 1837 United Kingdom general election was triggered by the death of King William IV and produced the first Parliament of the reign of his successor, Queen Victoria. It saw Robert Peel's Conservatives close further on the position of the Whigs, who won their fourth election of the decade. The election marked the last time that a Parliament was dissolved as a result of the demise of the Crown. The dissolution of Parliament six months after a demise of the Crown, as provided for by the Succession to the Crown Act 1707, was abolished by the Reform Act 1867. Baron Harlech
Baron Harlech, of Harlech in the County of Merioneth, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1876 for the Conservative politician John Ormsby-Gore, with remainder to his younger brother William. He had previously represented Carnarvon and North Shropshire in the House of Commons. Ormsby-Gore was the eldest son of William Ormsby-Gore, Member of Parliament for County Leitrim, Carnarvon and North Shropshire, and the great-great-great-grandson of William Gore, third and youngest son of Sir Arthur Gore, 1st Baronet, of Newtown, second son of Sir Paul Gore, 1st Baronet, of Magharabag, whose eldest son Paul was the grandfather of Arthur Gore, 1st Earl of Arran. Stanley Leighton
Stanley Leighton (1837 – 4 May 1901) was an English barrister, landowner, artist and Conservative politician. He is also known as an antiquarian and author. Life Leighton was the younger son of Sir Baldwin Leighton, 7th Baronet, of Loton Park, and his wife Mary Parker. He was educated at Harrow School and Balliol College, Oxford. He then attended Inner Temple and was called to the bar on 18 November 1861, proceeding to the Oxford Circuit. In 1867 he travelled to the colonies with his friend and fellow-barrister, Rees Davies. His diaries record a trip to India and Ceylon in 1867-1868 and the pair visited Australia in 1868 where Leighton produced many original sketches. In 1869 his father passed on to him the Sweeney estate at Oswestry which had come to his mother through the Parker family. He became J.P. for Shropshire in 1869 and also Deputy Lieutenant. George Bridgeman, 4th Earl Of Bradford
George Cecil Orlando Bridgeman, 4th Earl of Bradford JP DL (3 February 1845 – 2 January 1915), styled Viscount Newport from 1865 to 1898, was a British soldier and peer. The elder son of the 3rd Earl of Bradford and the Hon. Selina Louisa Forester, Bridgeman was educated at Harrow School, and served in the 1st Life Guards and the Shropshire Yeomanry, reaching the rank of Captain. He succeeded his father in his titles on 9 March 1898. Bridgeman was Member of Parliament (MP) for North Shropshire from 1867 to 1885. He was Deputy Lieutenant of Warwickshire and Shropshire, as well as Justice of Peace for Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Shropshire. Adelbert Wellington Brownlow-Cust, 3rd Earl Brownlow (19 August 1844 – 17 March 1921), was a British soldier, courtier and Conservative Party (UK), Conservative politician. Charles Cust
Charles Henry Cust (27 September 1813 – 19 May 1875) was a British soldier and Conservative politician. Background Cust was the second son of John Cust, 1st Earl Brownlow, and his first wife Sophia, daughter of Sir Abraham Hume, 2nd Baronet. John Egerton, Viscount Alford, was his elder brother. Military and political career Cust was a Captain in the Royal Horse Guards. In 1859 he was appointed High Sheriff of Northamptonshire and in 1865 was returned to Parliament for Shropshire North. He held the seat only until the following year, when he was succeeded by his nephew, Adelbert Brownlow-Cust Family Cust married Caroline, daughter of Reginald George Macdonald, in 1842. Rowland Clegg-Hill, 3rd Viscount Hill (5 December 1833 – 30 March 1895), known as Rowland Hill until 1872, was a British Conservative politician. Background Born Rowland Clegg Hill, at Hawkstone Hall, Shropshire, he was the son of Rowland Hill, 2nd Viscount Hill, and Anne, daughter of Joseph Clegg. In 1874 he assumed by Royal licence the additional surname of Clegg before that of Hill. He was educated at Shrewsbury School. Military service Hill was commissioned as cornet in the North Shropshire Yeomanry Cavalry in 1853, and captain in 1866. 1859 United Kingdom General Election
In the 1859 United Kingdom general election returned no party a majority of seats in the House of Commons. The Earl of Derby's Conservatives formed a minority government, but despite making overall gains, Derby's government was defeated in a confidence vote by an alliance of Palmerston's Whigs together with Peelites, Radicals and the Irish Brigade. Palmerston subsequently formed a new government from this alliance which is now considered to be the first Liberal Party administration. There is no separate tally of votes or seats for the Peelites. Shropshire North (UK Parliament Constituency)
North Shropshire is a constituency in the county of Shropshire, represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament by Helen Morgan of the Liberal Democrats after a by-election on 16 December 2021. The former MP, Owen Paterson of the Conservatives, resigned his seat on 5 November 2021 when faced with suspension from the Commons for a breach of advocacy rules and the consequent possibility of a recall petition.
