John Onoje
John Onoje (born 15 April 1959) is a Sierra Leone-born activist from Chișinău, the Republic of Moldova. He is a notable activist and member of the National Liberal Party (PNL). Onoje was a self-declared member of the Hyde Park public activism group presided by Oleg Brega In 2011, he signed up to run for President in the Moldovan presidential election. Onoje's activity has been so well publicised that a party leader, Victor Şelin, proposed the withdrawal of his Moldovan citizenship on this basis. Onoje is a naturalised Moldovan citizen with a Sierra-Leonean background; he came to Moldova from Sierra Leone in 1999, to escape the civil war in his home country. In 2001, the UN Refugee Agency granted him the statute of refugee. While fighting to become a fully-fledged Moldovan, Onoje learnt the language and became a well-known face at the Chișinău open market, where he sells newspapers. Sierra Leone Colony And Protectorate
The Colony and Protectorate of Sierra Leone (informally British Sierra Leone) was the British colonial administration in Sierra Leone from 1808 to 1961, part of the British Empire from the abolitionism era until the decolonisation era. The Crown colony, which included the area surrounding Freetown, was established in 1808. The protectorate was established in 1896 and included the interior of what is today known as Sierra Leone. The 2012 Moldova security zone incident happened in the Transnistrian security zone maintained by the Joint Control Commission on the territory of the Republic of Moldova. On 1 January, a Moldovan civilian drove through a checkpoint in the zone and was fatally wounded by a Russian soldier. The civilian died a few hours later at a Chișinău hospital. His death raised tension between Russia and Moldova and revived a decades-old debate over the presence of Russian forces in Moldova. The incident caused demonstrations in Moldova, in which the protesters demanded free passage through the security zone and the withdrawal of Russian troops. Triumphal Arch, Chișinău
The Triumphal Arch ( ro, Arcul de Triumf) is a monument situated in Central Chișinău next to the Nativity Cathedral on Piața Marii Adunǎri Naționale nr. 2 and directly opposite Government House. History The Triumphal Arch was built in 1840 by the architect I. Zauschevic and thanks to the governor's of Bessarabia initiative to commemorate the victory of the Russian Empire over the Ottoman Empire during the Russo-Turkish War (1828–29). From its construction to 2011 the monument sheltered at its second level a huge bell of nearly 6.400 kg (400 Puduri). It was smelted with the copper of the cannons captured by the Russian forces from the Ottoman Empire. The bell "clopote–velican" was initially made for the cathedral's belfry but happened to be too big for it. Finally it was installed in this arch, which was designed in purpose.
