John Oliver Wardrop
Sir John Oliver Wardrop Order of the British Empire, KBE Order of St Michael and St George, CMG (10 October 1864 – 19 October 1948) was a British diplomat, traveller and translator, primarily known as the United Kingdom's first Chief Commissioner of South Caucasus, Transcaucasia in Georgia (country), Georgia, 1919–20, and also as the founder and benefactor of Kartvelian studies at University of Oxford, Oxford University. After travelling to Georgia (then part of Imperial Russia) in 1887, Wardrop wrote his study ''The Kingdom of Georgia'', published in 1888. In 1894 during his second journey to Georgia he mastered the Georgian language and published a series of books on Georgia, including his translation of Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani's ''A Book of Wisdom and Lies, The Book of Wisdom and Lies''.
