John O. Merritt
John O. Merritt was an expert in the applications of stereoscopic 3D displays and remote-presence systems. He was a Fellow of SPIE and co-chaired the annual SPIE/IS&T Conference on Stereoscopic Displays and Applications since co-founding it in 1990. He taught, together with Andrew Woods, a short course on "Stereoscopic Display Application Issues" each year at the annual Stereoscopic Displays and Applications conference. He also co-chaired the IS&T/ SPIE 2002 Electronic Imaging: Science and Technology Symposium. He was the author of over 60 technical reports and papers in topics related to vision and simulation. Topics he worked on include telerobotics, medical imaging and military off-road mobility. He was the Chief Technology Officer of The Merritt Group. Merritt died in July 2021 at age 81. IS&T
The Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T) is a professional society (a type of research and education organization) in the field of photography. Founded in 1947 as the Society of Photographic Scientists and Engineers (SPSE), it is headquartered in Springfield, Virginia. In 2018 it had about 850 members worldwide, and 5,000 participants in its various technical and industry-related programs. IS&T is perhaps best known for its technical conferences and courses on various aspects of imaging science and technology, including digital imaging, digital printing, color imaging, photofinishing, archiving, and digital fabrication. Stereoscopic Displays and Applications (SD&A) is an academic technical conference in the field of stereoscopic 3D imaging. The conference started in 1990 and is held annually. The conference is held as part of the annual Electronic Imaging: Science and Technology Symposium organised by the Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T). Telerobotics is the area of robotics concerned with the control of semi-autonomous robots from a distance, chiefly using television, wireless networks (like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and the Deep Space Network) or tethered connections. It is a combination of two major subfields, which are teleoperation and telepresence. Teleoperation Teleoperation indicates operation of a machine at a distance. It is similar in meaning to the phrase "remote control" but is usually encountered in research, academic and technical environments. Stereoscopy
Stereoscopy (also called stereoscopics, or stereo imaging) is a technique for creating or enhancing the illusion of depth in an image by means of stereopsis for binocular vision. The word ''stereoscopy'' derives . Any stereoscopic image is called a stereogram. Originally, stereogram referred to a pair of stereo images which could be viewed using a stereoscope.
