John O'Shea (director)
John Dempsey O'Shea (20 June 1920 – 8 July 2001) was a New Zealand independent filmmaker; he was a director, producer, writer and actor. He produced the only three feature films that were made in New Zealand between 1940 and 1970. Early life New Plymouth is where O'Shea was born in 1920. His parents were both of Irish Catholic ancestry, his mother, Norah Frances Dempsey, was born in New Zealand and his father, John Joseph O’Shea, was from County Limerick, Ireland. He had three older siblings. He grew up in New Plymouth and Whanganui and then went to study in Wellington at Victoria University College where he got involved with a film society. He also studied at Christchurch Teachers' Training College, and in 1942 served in the New Zealand Army for two years during World War II with the ambulance corps in the Pacific and Italy. New Plymouth ( mi, Ngāmotu) is the major city of the Taranaki region on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand. The New Zealand Electronic Text Collection (NZETC; mi, Te Pūhikotuhi o Aotearoa) is a freely accessible online archive of New Zealand and Pacific Islands texts and heritage materials that are held by the Victoria University of Wellington Library. It was named the New Zealand Electronic Text Centre until October 2012. The Library has an ongoing programme of digitisation and feature additions to the current holdings within the NZETC. NZ On Screen is a state-funded online promotional showcase of New Zealand television and film. Funded by NZ On Air, it provides free worldwide access to NZ-produced television, film and music videos. Content is streamed and the webpages provide authoritative background information. The site was launched in October 2008 and is updated constantly. It provides titles in full or as excerpts, with background notes, photographs and profiles of key cast and crew. The New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal was a commemorative medal awarded in New Zealand in 1990 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, and was awarded to approximately 3,000 people. Background The New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal was instituted by Royal Warrant of Queen Elizabeth II on 9 February 1990. Dame Gaylene Mary Preston (born 1 June 1947) is a New Zealand filmmaker with a particular interest in documentary films. Early life and family Born in Greymouth on 1 June 1947, Preston was educated at Colenso High School (now William Colenso College) in Napier, New Zealand, Napier. She went on to study at the Ilam School of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury from 1966 to 1968, and then the University of Hertfordshire, St Albans School of Fine Art in Hertfordshire, England, where she completed a Diploma of Art Therapy in 1974.
