John O'Donnell (Gaelic Footballer)
John "Hughie" O'Donnell (born Daniel John O'Donnell 1910 - 7 January 1954) was an Irish Gaelic footballer. A native of Dungloe, he was the foremost player in County Donegal, and a household name throughout the country, in the mid-1930s. O'Donnell had become one of Ulster GAA, Ulster's most popular footballers by the time he made his last appearance for the province in the GAA Interprovincial Championship, Railway Cup of 1937. Playing career Club O'Donnell was captain of CLG An Clochán Liath, An Clochán Liath's senior football team and his playing career coincided with what was, by far, the club's most successful period. CLG An Clochán Liath
CLG An Clochán Liath is a Gaelic football only GAA club based in An Clochán Liath, a Gaeltacht town in County Donegal, Ireland. The club fields both men's and ladies' teams at underage to Senior level. However, they currently play at intermediate level. The club were relegated to intermediate after 33 years in the 2020 Donegal Senior Football Championship. History An Clochán Liath have won the Donegal Senior Football Championship on seven occasions, the last coming in 1958. The club has had two players selected to the All-Ireland SFC All Star team: All-Ireland winning full forward Tony Boyle in 1992 and Adrian Sweeney in 2003. Noel McCole was the goalkeeper on the 1974 and 1983 Ulster Championship winning teams for Donegal, although he had transferred to St. Eunan's in 1979. Croke Park
Croke Park ( ga, Páirc an Chrócaigh, ) is a Gaelic games stadium in Dublin, Ireland. Named after Archbishop Thomas Croke, it is referred to as Croker by GAA fans and locals. It serves as both the principal national stadium of Ireland and headquarters of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). Since 1891 the site has been used by the GAA to host Gaelic sports, including the annual All-Ireland in Gaelic football and hurling. A major expansion and redevelopment of the stadium ran from 1991 to 2005, raising capacity to its current 82,300 spectators. The Sigerson Cup is the trophy for the premier Gaelic football championship among Higher Education institutions (Universities, Colleges and Institutes of Technology) in Ireland. It traditionally begins in mid January and ends in late February. Dr Lagan Cup
The Dr Lagan Cup was an inter-county Gaelic football competition in the province of Ulster. The competition was discontinued in 1967 when Donegal won the competition. The Lagan Cup was the trophy for a Senior Football League, which at the time was limited to seven Ulster counties, unlike the Dr McKenna Cup, which is a knockout competition that includes all nine of Ulster's counties. The Mayo county football team (;) represents Mayo in men's Gaelic football and is governed by Mayo GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. All-Ireland Junior Football Championship
The All-Ireland Junior Football Championship is a GAA competition involving four Junior Gaelic football inter-county teams. Prior to a change in competition structure in 2021, the competition was previously for all Junior Gaelic football inter-county teams in Ireland. In this previous format, the definition of what constituted a Junior player differed from county to county. In some, the junior team was the second team after the senior team. This meant that any players who had not played with the senior team could play with the junior team. In others, such as Cork and Kerry, players could only be chosen from clubs that played in junior or intermediate grades. These counties could not choose players from senior clubs, even if they were not on the senior county team. When a team won this championship, it had to pick a new team for the following year.
