John Norman (Australian Politician)
John Norman (1855 - 11 July 1912) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Norman was born at Ayrshire, Scotland, the son of John Norman and his wife Margaret (née Wallace). He did his apprenticeship as a tailor in Scotland and when he arrived in Australia in 1883 he opened a tailor's shop in Maryborough. A tailor is a person who makes or alters clothing, particularly in men's clothing. The Oxford English Dictionary dates the term to the thirteenth century. 1907 Queensland State Election
Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 18 May 1907 to elect the 72 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The election was the first one in which women had a right to vote. The election was the first held since Premier William Kidston, formerly of the Labour Party, had founded a new movement with his own supporters as well as the Parliamentary Conservatives. The end result of the election was an improvement in Kidston's position, although he was still in minority government with Labour support. The main opposition group was Robert Philp's Conservatives. Charles Powers
Sir Charles Powers (3 March 1853 – 24 April 1939) was an Australian politician and judge who served as Justice of the High Court of Australia from 1913 to 1929. Early life Powers was born in 1853 in Brisbane, Queensland. He was educated at Ipswich Grammar School and Brisbane Grammar School captaining the Schools First XI. He was a talented sportsman, and at one point captained a state cricket team against a touring English side. After completing his articles of clerkship, Powers was admitted to practise law as a solicitor in 1876, after which he moved to Bundaberg to practise. In 1878, he married Kate Ann Thorburn, whose father was a solicitor from Victoria. Powers continued to work in Bundaberg until 1882. Politics In 1883 Powers became the mayor of Maryborough. In June 1888, Powers was elected to the Parliament of Queensland as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland for Burrum. John Annear (politician)
John Thomas Annear (3 June 1842 – 28 May 1910) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly and a Member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Politics John Annear was the member for Maryborough in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1884 to 1902 and a member of the Queensland Legislative Council from 1902 until his death in 1910.
